Overview

Had enough?

Whether you find the government oppressive, the economy spiraling out of control, or if you simply want adventure, you’re not alone. In increasing numbers, the idea is talked about openly: Expatriate.

Over three hundred thousand Americans emigrate each year, and more than a million go to foreign lands for lengthy stays.

But picking up and moving to another country feels like a step into the void. Where to go? How to begin? What to do?

Volume 2 of the Process Self-Reliance Series, this smartly designed two-color guidebook walks you through the world of the expat: the reasons, the rules, the resources, and the tricks of the trade, along with compelling stories and expertise from expatriate Americans on every continent.

Getting Out shows you where you can most easily gain residence, citizenship, or work permits; where can you live for a fraction of the cost of where you’re living now; and what countries would be most compatible with your lifestyle, gender, age, or political beliefs.

So if you’ve had enough of what they’re selling here and want to take your life elsewhere—well, isn’t that the American way? At any rate, it’s not illegal. Not yet, anyway.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
People immigrate for many reasons—retirees go looking for a milder climate and an economy where the dollar goes further; youth travels for adventure, educational opportunities, and encounters with new people and cultures. Entrepreneurs, meanwhile, seek new markets and business ventures. Then there are people returning to an ancestral homeland or following a loved one; others are leaving for political or social reasons. Freelance writer Ehrman treats all of the above and more in this second volume in the "Process Self-Reliance" series (the first is Aton Edward's Preparedness Now!: An Emergency Survival Guide for Civilians and Their Families). Sections cover all the major reasons to immigrate and the various ways to do so. Pros and cons of each are weighed and compared. In the many sidebars, expatriots describe their reasons for going and experiences in their new homes.
—Dan Forrest

Skip Getting Out: I returned mine; why you should too

regretfully, Ehrman provides a politicized view to what wouldve been a very good book. Exhibit A - Venezuela. "Free and fair elections...some censorship...freedom of expression and academic expression protected by law."!!! are you SERIOuS?!!!? Ehrman, read the news recently on state owned media? His leftist views and lack of objectivity provide an untrustworthy resource. i returned mine.

    more from this reviewer

"Getting Out: Your Guide to Leaving America"

I enjoyed this book tremendously. It was provocatice, idealistic, maybe not so realistic but a great read all the same. I'm more an armchair traveler than anything else, I like to dream, & even though I'm a die hard American, my younger sister has lived in Madrid, Spain, for about 11 years now & as I am always very interested in her experiences there, I was also interested in the experiences of other people in how they managed to move to, live in, & find their way in another country. I liked the personal stories provided in this book coupled with just enough practical information to whet your appetite for more. You would need more information than is given here to actually make a move, but this book is for the dreamer in us. It would make a good gift for anyone interested in traveling for any length of time.
