Don't expect to see Fabio's flowing mane on the cover of any of Jennifer Crusie's romance novels. She completely eschews the tradition of overwrought melodrama and heaving bosoms to toss a comic gauntlet into the romantic arena. Her fun, funny, and frisky books are a refreshing breeze in a genre that could easily grow stale.

Former schoolteacher Jennifer Smith got her Master's degree in Professional Writing and Women's Literature at Wright State University. She wrote her thesis on women's roles in mystery fiction before trying her hand at penning romance novels using her grandmother's family name Crusie. Despite her impressive credentials, she dismisses her debut novel Sizzle as "lousy" even as her fans clamber to gets their hands on this long out-of-print pulp romance. "That damn book is following me around the way early porn films follow actresses," so says Crusie one her web site of Sizzle.

No matter what the author thinks of her first effort, the astounding string of critically lauded bestsellers that followed it have firmly established Crusie as one of the very best writers of contemporary romantic fiction. Much of this is due to her sharp wit and ear for comedic dialogue, humor being an element often sorely missing in romance novels. The team is currently working on their second novel together Agnes and the Hitman.

I've never known anyone who was stood up for her own divorce before," Tina Savage told her sister. "What's it feel like?"

"Not good." Lucy Savage Porter tried to smooth her flowered skirt with a damp hand. "Can we go? I'm not enjoying this." She gave up on the skirt and clutched her lumpy tapestry bag to her as she glanced around the marble hallway of the Riverbend courthouse. "Bradley signed the divorce papers. We don't even need to be here."

Tina shook her head. "Psychologically, we need to be here. You had a ceremony when you got married, you need one when you get divorced. I want you to feel divorced. I want you to feel free. Now sit over there on that bench while I find Benton to tell me why this is taking so long."

I'd feel a lot freer if you'd stop ordering me around, Lucy started to say, and then blinked instead. She'd been having rebellious moments like that a lot lately, but they were hard to hold on to, especially since the only time she'd actually followed through on one, it had been a disaster. Right now she was sitting under a brassy head of curls because she'd decided to go blonde as a symbol of her freedom. Some symbol. She looked like Golden Barbie with crow's-feet.

Maybe the problem was that she wasn't an independent kind of person. Other than the hair fiasco, every time she'd decided to be more independent, logic stopped her cold. After all, Tina was right. She did need the closure of hearing the divorce decree. And the bench was the best place to sit. It would be illogical to disagree just for the sake of disagreeing.

No matter how good it would have felt.

She went over and sat down on the bench.

Tina was gone already, trying to find herhapless attorney in the flood of suits that washed around her. Poor Benton. He'd gone beyond the call of lawyerhood in ramming Lucy's divorce through the courts in two weeks, but that wasn't enough for Tina. Tina wouldn't be satisfied until Benton brought her Bradley's head on a platter. Lucy had a momentary image of Tina, dark and svelte and dressed in her white linen suit, standing in front of a flustered Benton who was offering her Bradley's handsome head on a turkey plate.

She liked it. Tina always did have the best ideas.

Tina suddenly appeared before her, parting the suits before her like the Red Sea. "There's some kind of delay. It'll be another hour, but then we'll go have lunch."

Another hour. "All right. At Harvey's Diner?"

Tina shrugged. "Whatever you want."

"Thank you." Lucy dug her physics textbook out of her bag.

"What are you doing?"

"I have to teach Planck's constant tomorrow." Lucy paged through the book. "It's a tough one to get across. I'm reviewing."

"You know, the next thing I'm getting you is a new job," Tina said, and disappeared back into the suits.

A new job?

"I like my job," Lucy said, but Tina was already gone.

Okay, that's the last straw." Lucy closed her book with a thump. Nobody's ordering me around anymore. From now on, I'm going to be independent even if it is illogical. I'm going to be a whole new me.

That's it.

I'm changing.

"Okay, that's it. I'm quitting," Zack Warren said to his partner. His shaggy dark hair fell across his forehead, almost into his eyes, but he was too mad to brush it back.

"Don't tell me, tell Jerry." Tall, cool, and controlled, Anthony Taylor nodded toward the man who had just pulled a gun on them.

Zack turned back to the gun, wavering now in the hands of the balding, middle-aged embezzler who stood quivering in his bad suit behind his empty desk. Jerry watched them warily, as warily as a cautious man might regard two big guys he was holding a gun on.

"I'm quitting, Jerry," Zack said. "You can let me go because I'm not going to be a cop anymore. You can have the badge."

He started to reach into his worn black leather jacket, and Jerry squeaked, "No!

    She's just gotten divorced and feels free again. Until she gets mugged in the alley.
    Bad things lead to her ex-husband, Bradley but she holds the secret.
    Somebody blows up her house, many times, her car, and the protection comes to pay a visit and
    stay. She has feeling for the cop and he as well.
    Lucy can't wait til they find out the person, there are a ton of bank bonds out there
    still and a strange double identity.
    Comical and serious at the same time.

    Cruise

    Apparently an early novel(1994) of Cruise's. Humorous...even laugh out loud silly at times. The main character is dingy but lovable as are her pet dogs. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all 150+ pages of this book.

    Meh

    After falling in LOVE with Bet Me, this was a giant disappointment. I thought I had found a new favorite author. I made all of my friends read Bet Me and they as well loved the book. We all also felt the same about Getting Rid of Bradley. I wanted to shake Lucy and whack Zack in the back of the head. However, after one reads it numerous times out of sheer boredomm it becomes tolerable. My advice? Don't spend your money on it but free is free. It is also more entertaining then reading a bus time table or counting tiles on the floor

    This was a cute book and very funny.

    It's horrible to find that you're stood up at your own divorce but even worse when you can't keep your eyes off another man less than an hour later! Odd things keep happening in this book. It seems as if someone is trying to kill Lucy but only when Zack is around - so is it that they're really trying to kill Zack?

    Just okay

    This was my first Crusie book and I really didnt start getting into the story until 8 or 9 chapters in. After that it was pretty good. Its not something I would recommend though.

    If you a fan of Crusie's more recent work, you may want to skip this one

    I've read a few Jennifer Crusie books and consider myself a fan, however this book I found disappointing. My caveat is, it's my understanding that this is one of her earlier books, one written before she had perfected her craft to the level it is now. That being said, this book was so disappointing I almost put it down.

    The problem? Well while it did have some humurous moments, Lucy was so stupid she was almost unendurable. She seemed to have no logic, Crusie, tried to put the reader inside of Lucy's mind to better understand her, but who would want to be in the mind of such a twit. What reasonable person would doubt a police officer when they were told their life was in danger? What reasonable person would resist the police department's attempts to keep them safe. Yep, Lucy was a nuisance.

    You can see in this book the beginnings of what Crusie does so well, which is to bring humor to her characters while making them relatable and realistic. This book was more of an unpolished version of her later work, there were parts that were so farfetched I was too exasperated to suspend disbelief to enjoy them. Lucy wasn't so much funny as annoying as hell and she certainly wasn't relatable or realistic.

    The good news, Crusie does a much better job in other books in refining her characters so they seem much more three dimensional. I would reccomend anyone looking for a good Jennifer Crusie book to check out BET ME.

    Great Book

    I really enjoyed this book. Her books are funny, romantic sometimes surprising and this book held true. You can completely get lost in the characters and feel as if you've known them forever. Short and fast read. One of my favorites of hers so far is "Bet Me." Absolutley the funniest books Ive ever read. Getting Rid of Bradley is a pretty close 2nd. Enjoy.......

    Loved It!

    I love the nipping and yipping of the protagonists. I enjoyed their imperfections. I loved that this wasn't contrived and made to be the perfect people get to be with perfect people book.

    Jennifer Cruise takes real folks and makes stories out of them. Brilliantly!

    I can't tell you how many times I found myself rolling my eyes. Thinking gosh, this is stupid. The dialog between Zack and Lucy was tiring, expecially in the beginning of the book.

    reissue of an old book?

    I read 'Getting Rid of Bradley' over 10 years ago in 1994. BN itself notes that Crusie won a Rita Award for it in 1992. What's up? Is this a reworking of an old book? The only hint that it is, is the tiny print on the cover stating that it is a Classic from the author. I think it is unfair not to have it prominently stated on the book cover and this web site that this book is a reissue or re-worked version of a previously released book. Seems disloyal to us loyal Crusie fans.

    Fun

    I thought this was a cute book. A fast, easy read....kept me entertained and laughing throughout. The little love story inside was cute....makes a person happy & hopeful.

    not as exciting

    all the other books i have read from jen cerusie have been so intense with sexual desire and thts what i love about her books. but this one lacked it. but it was cute and a little exhilirating. its just the bradley thing was all it was about. but still i like it, it was cute and at points made me laugh.

    It was a good, fast read and lots of fun. Don't think I'd read it again, though.

    It was O.K.

    THis is the forth book that I read by Jennifer Crusie. It's was O.K. the romance part is really predictable and I read a book that is smilar to this one, so I kind of got bored with the romance part. The crime part was intersting though. But over all, the book is good. You cannot put this book down. Jennifer crusie has the best characters. it made you feel like they are real.
