In this book, Betty K. Garner focuses on why students struggle and what teachers can do to help them become self-directed learners. Difficulty reading, remembering, paying attention, or following directions are not the reasons students fail but symptoms of the true problem: underdeveloped cognitive structures—the mental processes necessary to connect new information with prior knowledge; organize information into patterns and relationships; formulate rules that make information processing automatic, fast, and predictable; and abstract generalizable principles that allow them to transfer and apply learning.
Each chapter focuses on a key cognitive structure and uses real-life accounts to illustrate how learners construct meaning by using recognition, memorization, conservation of constancy, classification, spatial orientation, temporal orientation, and metaphorical thinking. The author's simple techniques stress reflective awareness and visualization. It's by helping students to be conscious of what their senses are telling them, encouraging them to visualize the information for processing, and then prompting them to ask questions and figure out solutions on their own that teachers can best help students develop the tools they need to

• Experience learning as a dynamic process of creating and changing.

Dr. Garner, a life ime learner herself, is helping teachers to help students develop cognitive structures and matability, a word credited to Garner. This is THE BOOK in helping struggling learners to learn. The book has rejuvinated the teachers to go back to their classrooms and help the ignored populations, the struggling students. Garner uses practical examples to give real insights on how children learn. She shows profound respect for all types of students, proving in her book that all students can learn they just learn differently. She uses real life stories and many concrete examples from her many years of teaching and working with children to illustrate her findings and make a point 'ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN.' Dr. Garner asks the reader to become a reflective researcher and not only teach students content but also guide them on how to learn. The latter part is the missing link in our educational system today that is based on test scores and compliance with state and federal mandates and regulations. Garner gives such practical and easy suggestions that are not only helpful to teachers but also to any parent who is invested in his/her child's education. Every teacher has a student like those mentioned in the book. The stories are real and the suggestions are easy to understand. Betty Garner's 'Geetting to Got it' is a book based on how children learn. This is the best book in helping struggling learners to learn I have read for many years. Garner uses practical examples to give real insights on how children learn. She shows that all students can learn they just learn differently. She uses real life stories and many concrete examples that are easy to understand and wonderful to read. I like best the part she writes about perseption.
