Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy Pollock-Gilson
Did you know that Yellowstone National Park has half of the world's geysers and is home to some 10,000 steam vents? Everything you ever wanted to know about geysers including where, when, and how they exist is covered in this fascinating book. Beautiful full-color photographs of geysers from around the world complement the clear explanatory drawings of what causes geysers to gush their plumes of steam. As part of the "First Books of Interest" series, children will continue to be fascinated with the wonders of nature when reading about geysers from under the ocean and throughout the world. Teachers and librarians will appreciate the additional cited resources and index.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6A good complement to Linda Jacobs's Letting Off Steam (Carolrhoda, 1989). Gallant explains where volcanoes are and extends his coverage to the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, home to 29 active volcanoes; New Zealand; Iceland; and brings it home to Yellowstone's Old Faithful (or perhaps "Old Unfaithful" as its lapse between eruptions grows gradually longer). In a writing style that is interesting and lively, the author describes geysers and discusses the work of famous scientists and geologists. A chapter on geysers endangered from both natural and human causes concludes the book. Although fairly well illustrated, the color photos are somewhat blurred. Most appear to be reproductions from travel or park brochures. Jacobs's book has more distinct photos, but Gallant's book has more information.Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, ID
