Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One-third of this book summarizes the Khan's life and his extraordinary success as a leader and warrior. When he was about fourteen years old, he killed his older brother, thus becoming the head of his household, married his childhood fiancée and used part of her dowry to form an allegiance with a neighboring tribe. He proved his bravery in battle when he was seventeen and set his goal of becoming head of all Mongol tribes. He steadily increased the number of tribes in his command through continued alliances and conquests. He established a legal code concerning most aspects of life and enforced these rules consistently. He was seen as a fair ruler who provided for the needs of his people. Many of his battles are described and a double-page map illustrates the growth of the empire under his leadership. He is credited with bringing social, cultural and technological advances to much of Asia. The remainder of the book describes everyday life in Mongolia, intertwining historical and current information about such things as homes, foods, clothing, sports and religious beliefs. Four folktales and a page of proverbs contribute to the sense of the culture. Reprints of historical paintings in both color and black-and-white add to the understanding of the concepts presented. A glossary, bibliography, listing of web sites and an index are included. Part of the "Rulers and Their Times" series. 2002, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, $28.50. Ages 10 to 14. Gr 6-8-This attractively illustrated, well-written book blends information about the khan's early life, family, rise to power, and qualities that made him a successful ruler with descriptions of the Mongols' everyday life and excerpts from their folklore. The author describes the positive aspects of the conqueror's leadership abilities and the merciless acts perpetrated by him and his warriors. The text is lively and descriptive, and colorful illustrations include reproductions of early works of art that depict the khan and scenes from Mongol life. Another useful title for reports is Robert Taylor's Life in Genghis Khan's Mongolia (Lucent, 2001).-Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, OR Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
