This is the first book I've read in this series, and I was very impressed by the way the ghost was handled. First, the ghost stays in the character of a hard-boiled 1940s private investigator no matter what happens, which is fun. The ghost speaks into the mind of the main character, Penelope Thornton-McClure, a device that has the potential to be downright annoying, but it's not overdone and the ghost adds a lot to the story. Second, the ghost can only travel with Penelope if a certain lucky coin is on her person. That leads to some interesting plot twists, such as the instance where the coin was left behind and so Penelope had to fill in the ghost on what she'd learned while they were apart. Finally (and I liked this the best) the ghost can come alive by taking Penelope back to his own time while she is dreaming. This allows them to interact physically, provides an entirely different world from the quiet Rhode Island town where Penelope lives, and literally brings the ghost to life. I greatly enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading others in the series.

    I Also Recommend:

Hip, quirky, romantic tale of film noir

Ever felt like there's a nagging voice in your head? Well, if you're Penelope Thornton-McClure, that "voice" is the very dead private dick Jack Shepard, who hasn't had a body since getting iced in 1949. Jack haunts Pen's bookstore Buy the Book and aids her in solving mysteries; in The Ghost and the Femme Fatale, the small town of Quindicott has its hands full with its first-ever Film Noir festival. Leading lady Hedda Geist, out of the limelight for decades after the grisly death of her studio boss Irving Vreen, is scheduled to make an appearance, but her first return to the stage is nearly her last.

Penelope, her aunt, and Jack are hot on the trail when festival guests turn up dead, leading them to uncover a decades-old tale of steamy affairs and cold-blooded murder. Snappy pacing, humor, and even a touch of romance between the hard-boiled Jack with his "iron jaw" and Penelope (the two "time travel" through dreams in order to investigate). Jack's language is pure pulp fiction / noir, and the touches from the 1940s were nice. This is the same author who pens the Coffeehouse Mysteries, and I loved the take-charge Pen, the sexy Jack, and the quirky cast of supporting characters. The mystery included enough twists and turns that I didn't even suspect the real villain until the shocking (and appropriately noirish) finale. This was the first book in the series that I read (it's number four), and I can't wait to devour the further adventures of Jack and Pen (I'd like to see their romance heat up!).

    Jack & Penelope Score again!

An interesting case for Penelope and Jack. Lots of movie triva, and a case Jack actually knows something about. He and Penelope move between the past and the present to hunt a killer, or two. Great fun, and a very good series.

    A mystery to the end.

A fun read that has you guessing until the end. Jack and Pen make a great team. I enjoyed the tie in with Jack's case from the past and Pen's latest mystery. A fun little cozy that will make you feel good.

Ghost and the Femme Fatale is a charming whodunit

Penelope Thornton-McClure (and her Aunt Sadie) owns Buy the Book bookstore in Quindicott, Rhode Island in which the ghost of murdered in 1949 detective Jack Shepard resides. Penelope is the only person who can hear Jack, who is confined to the bookstore except when Penelope carries his buffalo nickel on her, which enables him to go where she goes.------------- The local theatre has been closed for years, but recently was renovated with the grand re-opening this weekend. The owners are putting on a Film Noir Festival with guests from a decades-old crime. The biggest draws are Hedda Geist and her former boyfriend actor Pierce Armstrong. Jack was at the restaurant in 1948 following a cheating husband when he saw Pierce get into a fight with Hedda¿s married lover studio owner Irvin Vreen. Pierce shoved Irvin onto a knife Hedda was holding killing Vreen. He received five years for manslaughter.----------- In the present several people connected to the crime are killed while the police assume they are accidents, Penelope and Jack think it is murder. They investigate and find several suspects, but none seemingly with a motive.--------- The hard boiled detective who is a ghost meets the bookstore owner in her dreams for a bit of romancing, which adds an esoteric whimsical spice to this wonderful cozy. Whereas the heroine would like to hide inside a good book, Jack shows her life needs to be lived he proves to good a teacher as she makes him nervous when she takes chances while sleuthing. The mystery is cleverly designed so that most readers will need to stay till the last reel to figure out who the culprit is and why. Alice Kimberly¿s latest The Ghost and the Femme Fatale is a charming whodunit for fans that prefer no explicit violence in their mysteries.-------- Harriet Klausner
