Sibling bonds are tested beyond the grave in this affecting story of a boy whose dead older brother returns in spectral form. Ages 8-12. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-- Wally, 11, can't accept the fact that Jon-o, his charismatic, accomplished, athletic 15-year-old brother, has drowned while trying to save another's life. Summer vacation is depressing and tense when his bossy, rigid Aunt Flo and her snotty daughter Nicole come to help out when Wally's mother returns to work. In the weeks after the funeral, Wally believes that Jon-o appears to him; the boy is determined to keep his brother ``alive'' by becoming the person Jon-o was. Formerly cautious, reflective, and a good student, Wally apes his older brother's reckless streak, even attracting the notice of the local police. Attempting to be a daredevil skateboarder like Jon-o, Wally courts physical danger and disappointment. His obsession with and failure at skateboarding ultimately opens the way for growth, for an appreciation of his own worth and promise, and for understanding that lost loved ones live on in our hearts. This is an honest, moving treatment of grievous loss that shines with believable characterizations and perceptive descriptions of the lives of young teens. It will hold the interest and enrich the lives of thoughtful readers. --Libby K. White, Schenectady County Pub . Lib . , NY
