Overview

There are other worlds with mysteries to solve.
Worlds where not all of the suspects are technically alive.
That's when Karma kicks in.

For all those transmortis anomalies that need to be exterminated, there's Karma Marx-a woman who exorcises haunted houses, sending troublesome spirits and entities to the ever after. What she'd really like is to banish Spider, her cheating, sleazy realtor husband, from her life. So, she makes him a deal: she'll clean one last home for him if he grants her a divorce.

The only problem is that Adam, the house's former owner, isn't happy with Karma's plan. Using his poltergeist powers, he seals the place, forcing Karma, Spider, and a motley assortment of characters (living and not-so-living) together for a hair-raising twelve hours. But when Spider turns up dead in the basement, it's a locked house mystery, and Karma's determined to reveal the truth, even if it means tackling all of the mansion's inhabitants-mortal and otherwise...

I am tearing myself away from this book just long enough to leave this review. I am nearly halfway through and I love it! Karma is a wonderfully relatable character and the way the author brings the Otherworld to life feels effortless. One of my favorite elements is the way Karma and Desdemona interact. Not even done yet, and this is already one of my favorite Katie Macalister books!

This latest book by Katie MacAlister, will take you on a trip to the paranormal world of ghosts, poltergeists, unicorns, imps and spirits. Karma our heroine, is a cleaner. Ghost of a Chance is a paranormal "who done it". The story centers around Karma Marx, her father, Karma's heinous husband named Spider, along with Spider's equally sleazy business partner and his paranormal investigator wannabe of a wife. Set in an old Victorian mansion, which of course is haunted, and is inhabited by a man who is a member of the Otherworld Police, and his ghostly servants. Throw in an orphaned, teenaged, Goth Girl plus a handfull of imps, and lock all of them up in the Victorian Mansion for twelve hours. This story is written true in classic murder mystery style, with many twists and turns to follow before determining the suspect and the motive. With plenty of comic relief added by Katie MacAlister, and true to her style of storytelling, this book is fast and fun!

Karma Marx is an otherworldly being who is half polter and half human. She is fast, able to hide in shadows and busy working off a punishment for a past childhood transgression. Her job is extermination, cleaning up the homes of otherworldly beings. Job hazard, bringing her work home with her. Karma's husband Spider is a total tool. In order for him to sign the divorce papers, he wants her to do an extermination job for him. The job goes bad right from the beginning. Enter Mereidth, her wife and handsome Adam. They all have something they want from the house. Next thing you know, there is murder, mayhem and a mystery to solve. 12 hours isn't very long to solve a murder, but then we aren't Karma Marx. Katie MacAlister has done it again with this fun filled romp into paranormal mystery. Make way for a book populated with Polters, a unicorn, a guardian and a few imps who keep following Karma home no matter what.

This book, like so many of her other books, takes you into the world of the "Otherworld" and starts off fast paced and stays that way! Karma Marx has major problems with her husband Spider (of course with a name like that you kinda immediately think jerk), her father is quite the oddball character, then of course there is her foster child Pixie who is fifteen and full of anger. Then you add in all those Otherworld beings that live with Karma who add so much to the story. This is a complex murder mystery that has you trying to figure out who the suspect is, but it could be any and all of the characters in this book who have a real motive to be the suspect in the murder. Very riveting story, full of twists and turns. Great intro into the Otherworld characters. Another one of Katie MacAlister's great books!
