Overview

View our feature on Simon R. Green's Ghost of a Chance.

A brand-new series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Nightside novels!

The Carnacki Institute exists to "Do Something" about Ghosts-and agents JC Chance, Melody Chambers, and Happy Jack Palmer will either lay them to rest, send them packing, or kick their nasty ectoplasmic arses with extreme prejudice.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
If future novels in Green's new Ghost Finders series are as engaging as this one, they will hold up admirably against his previous work. Intellectual JC Chance, techno-geek Melody Chambers, and telepath Happy Jack Palmer are called upon to investigate a haunting in one of London's underground tube stations. Even though this has all the earmarks of a big league event, their boss explains that since none of the Carnacki Institute's A-Teams are available, London's future has to lie in the hands of this hapless trio. Even worse, the Institute's arch rival, the Crowley Project, aims to obliterate them one field agent at a time. Skirmishes and plot twists rule as Green serves up enough blood and viscera to slake the thirst of any thriller aficionado. Readers will appreciate the camaraderie and snappy dialogue of what is sure to become Britain's favorite ghost hunters. (Sept.)

The newest series from urban fantasy grand mage Simon R. Green is as good as the Nightside and the Secret Histories sagas

In a deserted supermarket in Bath, England are the Ghost Finder agents powerful in magic JC Chance, technological geek who disdains magic Melody Chambers, and telepath Happy Jack Palmer. The place is haunted and between psi and tech skills, they locate a stone age settlement miles beneath the parking lot. A woman's murder led to the haunting, but they obtain justice and dispatch the victim to the next plane and malevolence lingering from ancient times is destroyed.

Shortly afterward, the team, who are part of the Carnacki Institute, is summoned to meet with their boss. A massive supernatural event occurred at London's Oxford Circus Tube Station. The team is to learn what supernatural essence caused the incident, kick its butt, and send it back to whatever hell it calls home. They realize "it" is a Power so potent no one can defeat it. Adding to their difficulty is two dark arts practitioners from the Crowley Institute; the mission of these operatives is to kill the three Carnacki agents. When they comprehend that the otherworldly entity can terraform the planet into its environs, the adversarial pair of earth groups unite though none of the five field operatives believe they have a ghost of a chance to prevent the extinction of their world.

The newest series from urban fantasy grand mage Simon R. Green is as good as the Nightside and the Secret Histories sagas. Each of the three Carnacki heroes have their own personalities, which feel believable as they fight the supernatural; their human enemies become frenemies because they may practice dark magic but are not suicidal as they do not want to be devoured by otherworldly powers. Filled with action, no one turns London into a horror-fantasy playground better than Mr. Green consistently does as the city has a Ghost of a Chance of surviving the writer's latest magical mayhem.

    Nightside Books Better

I missed the narrator's voice & sarcasm. I missed having a variety of locations. This is all one battle against one bad guy, except for the opening scene. There's way too much of the characters explaining stuff to each other that they should all already know & we do because the omniscient narrator already told us. Not bad, but nowhere near as good as this author can be.

    Hmmm ... What to say ... ???

To start, allow me to state that I am a huge fan of Mr. green's literary works. Why then did I only give this book a three star rating? Sadly, I feel that Ghost of a Chance is only a ghost of a book. Entertaing? Well, ultimately, yes. The opening scene, without giving anything away, was great. However, from that point forward, up until about half way through the story, the banter between the Carnacki agents just isn't enough to push this novel forward at an interesting enough speed. For a good long while everything presented just seems hollow and only vaguely entertaining. It plods on and on ... And for a shortish book, that's too much plodding! It could be possible that the absence of the usual "from-the-get-go-break-neck-speed" that Mr. Green writes in is what had me feeling out of sorts. Ghost of a Chance DOES eventually pick up the pace but by then I had lost a great deal of reading momentum. This book just was not the page-turner that I was hoping for. In the end, I did find JC, Happy, and Melody to engague enough interest in me to want to see more. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the Ghostfinders series.

only if you are a die hard fan

I love most of what Simon Green does but this seemed like he did it when he was in the middle of another book or something and didn't really care at all how this one turned out. The characters have no depth or backstories and not much is truly explained about what the Carnacki Institute is about.

    HP Lovecraft meets Clive Barker

While I enjoyed this book, I think that teh Drood and Nightside series are slightly better. It is definitely weird and has moments of quite graphic horror- including cannibalism. Maybe the reason I didn't like it quite as much as his other series is that there are three main characters instead of just one.

    Great time filler

This book is about a threesome from the Carnacki Institute, a threesome that battles ghosts. They are headed by JC, a man with a myriad of talents. Then there is Melody, the (whorish) female. She doesn't have any true supernatural talents, however she is amazing with technology. Then there is Happy, a man that can see the world for what it truly is.

JC is an I'm-the-cool-guy-and-I'm-going-to-pretend-I-don't-care-but-I-care-more-than-anybody-else character. He is also the CI protege. Melody is described as a do-what-I-do techno nerd that likes to get around. And Happy is a pill popping borderline looney that always throws that extra edge in.

Okay, so yeah, this book is def a bit slower that SRG's other novels/series, but it's a quick read that's funny and keeps you turning the pages. It does have SRG's *SPOILER* style as from the Nightside series in that there is a haunting in a metro station where there is a Hell-bound train and all kinds of poster that change, even when you're looking directly at them *END SPOILER*

As for the other reviewers that don't like the book, oh well, I think it's a nice read, however I do suggest picking it up at a used bookstore for a bit cheaper than 7.99
