In GHOST OF A GRINGO, Mary Madsen Hallock captures the native soul of southern Mexico. That's saying a lot. Her mysteries turn on that point where the runaway missiles of modern international society pierce the rich fabric of Zapotec Indian life. She invests her Zapotec characters with a deep and detailed knowledge of their culture, ways of thought, and dignity, and contrasts them with the often bankrupt minds of 21st century tourists and schemers. GHOST OF A GRINGO sets murder most foul amongst the fabulous archaeological excavations of The Valley of Oaxaca. Milly's friendship with an elderly Zapotec guard at the ruins of Yagul brings them both through exciting adventures as they dig for answers among the tombs.

Thank you very much for sending NINE DAYS OF DEATH and GHOST OF A GRINGO for me to read and enjoy. They evoked scenes of Oaxca with great warmth and understanding, and demonstrated your sensitivity to and knowledge of Oaxacan ways. The characters are unforgettable.

You'll read Mary Madsen Hallock's NINE DAYS OF DEATH in one day because you won't be able to put it down. Meet the Author

Mary Madsen Hallock has spent most of her life in California, but fell in love with the huge Colonial city of Oaxaca when it was still a sleepy provincial capital of some twelve thousand souls. Ten years later she became owner of the real Casa Colonial and led more than fifty groups of tourists to the area. She now resides in Santa Rosa, California, and is hard at work on NINE DAYS OF DEATH, the next book in the Casa Colonial mystery series. She is still in regular contact with her Zapotec friends in Oaxaca.
