Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel
From a new master of horror comes an apocalyptic showdown between the residents of a secluded, rural town and the deadly evil that confronts them wherever they turn . . .

Evil Doesn't Die
The cozy little town of Pine Deep buried the horrors of its past a long time ago. Thirty years have gone by since the darkness descended and the Black Harvest began, a time when a serial killer sheared a bloody swath through the quiet Pennsylvania village. The evil that once coursed through Pine Deep has been replaced by cheerful tourists getting ready to enjoy the country's largest Halloween celebration in what is now called "The Spookiest Town in America."

It Just Grows Stronger
But then-a month before Halloween-it begins. Unspeakably desecrated bodies. Inexplicable insanity. And an ancient evil walking the streets, drawing in those who would fall to their own demons and seeking to shred the very soul of this rapidly fracturing community. Yes, the residents of Pine Deep have drawn together and faced a killer before. But this time, evil has many faces-and the lust and will to rule the earth. This struggle will be epic.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Maberry supplies plenty of chills, both Earth-bound and otherworldly, in this atmospheric horror novel, the first of a trilogy. Thirty years after the citizens of Pine Deep, Pa., killed the serial killer known as the Reaper, the town enjoys a quiet idyll and a tourist-friendly reputation as "the most haunted town in America." But gearing up for its annual Halloween celebration, the town is unprepared for the real haunts stirring in their corn fields, seeking to finish what the Reaper started. Switching among a large cast of characters, Maberry builds suspense by degrees, in the process exploring the community of Pine Deep. Showing his smalltown Americans at their worst-through domestic abuse, religious fanaticism and cowardice-Maberry proves how everyday, evening -news-grade sadism can dovetail neatly with capital-E Evil and the supernatural big guns that carry it out. This is horror on a grand scale, reminiscent of Stephen King's heftier works (The Stand, Needful Things) and just as dense with detail; though it simmers a bit too long, and the payoff doesn't quite measure up, Maberry can be forgiven-as long as he fulfills his grisly promises in the sequel. Pleasently surprised

I could not put this book down! Im a fan of Stephen King and
Dean Koontz and I have to say Jonathan Maberry is the first writer i have ever thought is of the same caliber as them! I couldnt wait to read the other 2 books! I was not disappointed!

    Good not Great

Book starts out slow but not in the sense of action or pace. It just takes at least two thirds of the way to get a sense or any type of feel for the characters or plot. That being said the last half of the book will make you want more. So I will defiantly try Dead Man's Song. Would Recommend.

    It's Okay

I think it was okay but I wouldn't encourage anyone to buy it. Get it from your town library.

    I got the Blues

I've read many books by different authors with all of them being great with a few favorites. Then I saw the cover of this book on a myspace page awhile back and checked it out and simply bought the book based only on it's cover. I gotta say after reading the first few pages, I was blown away by the style of writing jonathan uses. I read that book quicker than any other book and it is a original thrill ride from first to last page. This book is so different from alot of other supernatural thrillers in the fact that it's better than most others already out there. My favorite author is still Dean Koontz but Jonathan Maberry ranks a close second now. I just purchased the second book to this trilogy "Dead Man's Song" and I can't wait to see what happens next. If you see this book, grab it and run home with it, wait til nightfall and read it then. It is without doubt a good scare of a read..

'Mythical and often, all too real...'

Thirty years after a serial killer wreaked havoc through the small peaceful town of Pine Deep, long past the time when a thin black man and a lone German fought by the light of the moon, the truth of what really happened still lay hidden deep within a forsaken swamp, waiting ... waiting for the chance to once again come forth ... stronger. With a solid cast of characters, Maberry draws readers in with his well-written, rhythmical words that resonate a tale that is both mythical and often, all too real, with the ease of a master bluesman effortlessly plucking out a tune. A compelling read, 'Ghost Road Blues' is speckled throughout with classic lyrics, evocative intention, and an ample supply of 'can't put it down' moments, and although I'm not typically a reader of this genre, the opening scene where a young man is being ripped from his seat on a hayride as the rest run for safety is what caught my interest--only to be followed by the phrase that kept it: 'The Bone Man killed the devil with a guitar...' Great job, Jonathan!

    To of the Line Thriller

Ghost Road Blues is a very cool book -a creepy thriller with a whopping dose of the supernatural and some genuine heart. I particularly love the characters, each of whom are realistic. You feel you know them...which is scary because there are some you'd definitely never want to know. And the very ending is quietly chilling.

    Outstanding

There are few writers who can successfully mix the supernatural with a good, solid mystery. John Connolly, Peter Straub and James Lee Burke are the names that come to mind, and it's a small club. I saw Jonathan Maberry's name on a book club's list of 'supernatural thriller writers' and took a shot at it. I'm usually disappointed by writers who try to join that club. The good news is that Maberry has just bought his way in with his first novel, GHOST ROAD BLUES. At it's heart the book is a good versus evil story with a black-hearted SOB of a killer named Karl Ruger, an even fouler SOB named Vic Wingate, and a total meltdown named (ready?) Tow-Truck Eddie. All three are villain enoigh for a single book, but Maberry's novel kicks off a series of three books, and my guess is he'll explore each villain in more depth in the following books (if the format of this one is any indication). The story unfolds in a way that really allows the reader to get to know the large cast of characters. That's important, because these are realistically drawn people, not cartoon cutouts. I saw in a previous review that a reviewer didn't think there was enough of a finale to the story. Well, if two hellacious knock-down-drag-out brawls that become gunfights don't qualify as a solid finale then I don't know what that joker is looking for. For someone like me, who reads Burke, Connolly, Straub and that caliber of writing --and who teaches American Lit here in Baton Rouge-- I give Mabery top marks for his first effort. Consider me a fan.

    Lots of fun

Ghost Road Blues is a return to old school horror, the kind that made us love the genre to begin with. At the same time, it also offers a newer, more modern feel to it. Always believable, it is almost impossible to read the book and not care for the characters. Just when you think it is going to get predictable, you are in for a surprise. Can't wait to read the sequel.

    A wonderful ride

Ghost Road Blues' is a thrilling roller coaster ride that grabs hold of you from the first word and doesn't let go until the end. And just when you think you've got it all figured out, the novel twists and turns along its tracks, leaving you amazed at Maberry's writing genius. This is one ride you don't want to miss.

    AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

This novel scared the bejesus out of me!!! I usually do not read horror (alright I'm a little afraid) but after constant urging from my buddy to check out Ghost Road Blues I finally gave it a chance...AND WOW! Let's just say I'm 19 and now sleep with a nightlight. Maberry does an amazing job with his character development (dialog, inner monologues, etc...) and truly brings some VICIOUS characters to life that I wouldn't be comfortable confronting in my DREAMS (you'll get it when you read it)! Through a weaving of very interesting yet twisted interconnected storylines Maberry manages to instill feelings of deep anxiety, panic and straight terror that is sure to keep the pages flying. Way to go Maberry...keep them coming!!!!
