When an unknown someone shoots him and leaves him to die, Harry Dresden hopes he might be heading to a better place. Unfortunately, being dead doesn’t make Harry’s life any easier.

Trapped between life and death, he learns that his friends are in serious trouble. Only by finding his murderer can he save his friends and move on—a feat which would be a lot easier if he had a body and access to his powers. Worse still are the malevolent shadows that roam Chicago, controlled by a dark entity that wants Harry to suffer even in death.

Now, the late Harry Dresden will have to pull off the ultimate trick without using any magic—or face an eternity as just another lost soul…

Editorial Reviews

When last seen, wizard detective Harry Dresden was in a most unenviable position: he was dead. This predicament, not to mention the loss of his magic, doesn't however deter our hero from overcoming his enemies in the Windy City. Fantasy noir suspense of the highest order. Bound to be a bestseller.

Stars & stones (to borrow from Harry)! Not to offend anyone but this is to rate and review the BOOK not the prices. They have a link where you can log complaints and that will probably get you a lot better success than posting here. Not to offend, just simple truth. So, as to the book series...AWESOME!! I love Harry, his dry sense of humor, how he always falls into the hardest situations no matter how small they seem to be and how he handles it and never gives up. I am going crazy waiting for this book to come out. I've been an avid fan of this series ane they only keep getting better and better. Very few authors can carry off such a long series without people getting bored with the story but not this series, just better and better! Hurry up July!!

I managed to buy a copy of this book four days early and finished it in one sitting. I will do my best to not give out any spoilers. Harry still can't catch a break. He is just an incorporeal soul without a body who must go back to solve his own murder. To make matters worse, he is told that if he can not do this, three of his closest friends will be hurt horribly. Harry sets off with no body and no magic to unravel the mystery. We meet old friends and old enemies, angels, wraiths and other assorted baddies. (One problem, Thomas does not get enough page time.) Harry also learns how big of a shadow he casts over Chicago and just how important he was to the friends around him. This book is not exactly "newbie" friendly. If you are new to the series, you really should read the others of the series first. I highly recommend this book

I lucked into the Dresden Files by mistake. Now, I calendar the release date for each new installment. "Ghost Story" carries on the excellent story telling of Jim Butcher. As odd as it sounds, with Harry being dead, this book is a little less dark than some of the recent ones. We discover, as does Harry, how the other side sees our world. And it is, at times, funny in a way that only the Dresden Files can do "funny as dead". The characters are the same but there is a shift in who takes the lead with Butters and Molly (and a couple of new ones) having significant roles. I don't do synopsis of a book because you can get that anywhere and because I don't like spoilers. As a ghost, Harry has to contend with not being able to be seen or heard, an inability to touch or be touch, and the usual evil-ness that seems to inhabit the areas near him. Because the characters have changed, even in the 6-month-book-world of "Ghost Story", the series MUST be read in order to get full enjoyment. And, as always, Butcher ends with a cliffhanger, not a cheesy old Saturday serial one, but one that lets him segue into the next book. There is so much that can be said about the Dresden Files, but only one thing matters. You need to read them.

True escapism occurs in the mind! Jim Butcher has given us perhaps the most creative, imaginative and intriguing world to plunge ourselves into since we went to Mordor and beyond! As a literal world traveller, time spent on planes, trains and buses can be absolutely gruelling. The writing in this series is so adventurous, compelling and humorous that it actually provides comfort during uncomfortable times. The literature is what it is all about! Harry rules! I am in love with Murphy and I really need to meet Mouse! Jim's writing allows me to see them and know them clearly and vividly! Rock on True Believer! Oh yes, for those dweebs whining about the prices, SHUT UP! Tech costs! Literature Costs! If you don't like, give back and whine in your own soup so the rest of us do not have to listen to your drival!!

While I understand the frustration about the prices of the Nook Books please stop giving the actual books negative reviews because of it! Makes no sense and the books rating should not have to suffer for it. I'll give it a 5 star rating even though I haven't read it to counter some of the "bad reviews".

Picks up up right where we left Harry . . . Dead. Fast paced and witty, with Harry's iconic one-liner's. Read it in a day and a half. Already looking forward to #14 . . .

I am a long time fan of the Dresden series, therefore i purchased my book as soon as i was able to (12:20am EST to those who care). All I can say, was that the delayed release was well worth it. The book is amazing and far exceeded my expectations. I don't want to give any spoilers so I'll just say that this kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time i was reading it. Fans of the Dresden series will LOVE this book

I love all the Dresden books. I can wait to read this one. Dresde has brought me and my teenage boy closer together. We have reading wars to try to spoil the plot fornthe other. It's a lot of fun. He'll be like Mom have you gotten to the part where this or that happens to Harry? I usually answer and reveal the next perdicament Harry gets into. I am finding it hard to wait till July 26th!

It gets you from point A, where the last book ended, to point B, where the next book begins. Without spoilers, let's just say it clears up a pesky problem. There are some very good parts...and a lot of bad. This is the only Dresden Files book I did not enjoy.

I'm going to agree with Arcadia on this. Please don't give a book bad reviews because you don't like the price. After all, there are so many Free and low priced books they have to offer as well. Nobody likes high prices, but leave that for another discussion.

Ghost Story provides a small token of relief from the craptastic ending that is Changes-but then Jim Butcher remembered that he totally hates Harry Dresden and provided a rich story that left even more questions and doubt in the minds of loyal fans everywhere. The only question is, when is the next one coming out? Damn you, Jim Butcher. Damn you.

Great story. It's always fun to see Harry in action. I do want to see more of Mort, though. He's a great secondary character. It was just a good, fun way of spending a couple of hours. It had some nice plot twists and a few tender moments. Now if he'd just write the NEXT book.

Best. Book Ever. Harry reminds me of true chivelry, kindness, and virtue. He manages to save his part of the world while not only being true to himself but a leader and man to look up too. With the creation of Harry, Jim Butcher was made my hero ;)

If this series stops any time soon i will jump off a theroetical bridge. This installment thoroughly and expertly ties the plotlines together and sets the stage for a whole new era in The Dresden Files.

After the great novel and cliff hanger ending of changes i feel this book left much to be desired. While it was entertaining i dont really see how it developed dresden's character. The ending of ghost story could have been written as the ending of changes since dresden is inevitably left in the same predicament he had gotten himself into through changes. While the characters of mort and molly develop significantly the same development could have taken place in a story that developed dresdens character further. Coming off my favorite book in the series, changes, ghost story did disappoint a bit. Perhaps i will reread in some time and be more open to what this book offers, but for now this is my review.

I love this series and all the characters. Jim Butcher seems to out do himself with each new book. The hardest thing is putting the book down because you get so sucked into Harry's trials of his passing. And once again, Jim Butcher made me cry and I loved every moment of it.

This book is just incredible-any fan of paranormal or urban fantasy...or sci fi or mystery...should run out and start readig this series. This book can stand alone but it would be far more meaningful if you have reafld the others first. Ghost Story continues the adventures (or tribulations?) of Harry Dresden, wizard (he's in the phone book). This is one series that hasnt run out of steam, I was laughing and tearing up and desperate to find out what was going to happen right through the end.

This book is very entertaining. I really enjoyed it. You get to learn more about Harry and his past as he learns more about himself. Very introspective. I love all the classic quotes. I know this will be another book by Jim that I will read over and over. Can't wait until the next one! Oh and all those with problems with your nook, go to tech services!

I only started reading this series in the last few weeks. I saw the TV Show and it was ok, but that got me to read the first book and that got me hooked. Ghost Story was great, it kept me guessing throughout and having read the series so fast I can see the charter development that has gone into each person in the series. It makes me laugh, it makes me sad and sometimes if I were alone it would make me cry or at least sob a little. Bottom line: Great Book, Great Series, When is #14 coming out!!!!!!

This is an awesome series and a great book! Those who are complaining about the price do not understand that B&N has nothing to do with setting the price for books or nookbooks. Neither bookstores or publishers are being greedy...they are both businesses and they have to make money to stay in business. And for those how have an issue paying 14.99, you have a nook so you can request the book from the that not a major reason why nooks are out selling kindles. So stop all your whinging! Thank you for a great installment to the series Jim!

This is a great book. Harry is back and what he lack in body he makes up in...erm...spirit...and plenty of snark. I used the highlight feature on my Nook and marked some of my favorite zingers. Some lines will have you laughing out loud and you'll see the same suspense and sarcastic barbs. It was worth the wait even though I thought I'd go bonkers. (The book release was delayed a few months.) I hope the delay was to cut from the story and we'll be treated to a few short stories between now and the next release. There are a few special treats for fans of Star Wars, Star Trek and Pink Floyd. This probably isn't an ideal Dresden book to start as it doesn't fill blanks until later in the book. It's certainly possible, but it will be ten times better if you go back to Changes. Going back to the beginning and reading in order will be EVEN BETTER. This book series has become quite the guilty pleasure. They tried a TV series but it was before its time. This book and the visuals make me want to see a series reboot with a better execution.

Ever since the last one ended I have been waiting for this book, and I am glad I got it. The story is intriguing, and you get a look at the world without Harry. Plus the revelation of who killed Harry is great.
