Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Ghosts, but Were Too Afraid to Ask

From a very young age James Van Praagh was aware of a dimension that most of us cannot see, and he has dedicated his life to explaining it to the rest of us. The New York Times bestseller Ghosts Among Us takes us on an incredible journey into the spirit world that brings to light one of our greatest mysteries—what happens to us after we die?

Editorial Reviews

James Van Praagh has been described as an easygoing psychic, but there is nothing frivolous about the energetic co-executive producer of CBS's The Ghost Whisperer. In this book, the world-famous medium tiptoes adroitly through the spirit world, returning with stories that will both captivate and inform readers. Ghosts Among Us presents these creatures from the afterlife as supportive, communicative beings that serve as figures of inspiration during the most troubled times.
John Edward
“Thought provoking and provocative... Exactly what a book is supposed to do... James leads you on a journey that will make you question what you think you know about heaven and the afterlife.”
Jennifer Love Hewitt
“I love this book! His stories and experiences told through his thought provoking and inspiring words, makes a world which seems hard to understand tangible. Thank you James for showing me a whole new world.”

Uncovering the Truth About the Other Side

Chapter One

Growing Up with Ghosts

"I see dead people." Those four words from The Sixth Sense have woven their way into popular culture and will forever be synonymous with a person describing his ability to see and communicate with ghosts. Since this highly successful film was released in 1999, a whole slew of books, movies, and TV shows have been created, most of which would have never seen the light of day a decade ago. No one seems impervious to a ghostly encounter or two anymore. In fact, people come up to me all the time to describe their own often incredible stories of ghostly apparitions. I am extremely thankful that I have been a part of educating others about spirit communication and life after death.

To begin on this journey of discovery, I first want to assure everyone that there is no such thing as death. Death refers only to the end of the physical body. I say this with surety because since the age of two I have been communicating with "the dead." Ghosts walk among us, impressing us with their love, guiding us with their wisdom, and protecting us from harm.

The love of a grandfather

I will never forget the very first time I became aware of the others from a different world. I was a toddler in my crib, and I heard the sound of adult laughter coming from another room. I wanted so much to be out of the crib and with my parents. Like many babies, I cried for attention. My mother came into my room, picked me up, and soothed me for a while, then left me alone again. She didn't understand that I wanted to be with her and the rest ofthe adults in that other room. Night after night, I would stay awake and listen to the adults.

After a while, I became aware of tiny, sparkling lights dancing around my room, making unique patterns on the wall and around my crib. These sparkling lights fascinated me. Then one night the lights came together and formed a shape. I could see the shadow of a man standing in the corner of the room, his bright blue eyes piercing the darkness. He had a glow about him, a glow that came from inside out. I felt his presence to be very calming and loving. As he came closer to my crib, he smiled. There was nothing to be afraid of; in fact, he looked familiar to me. Although he never said anything, I could understand this man's thoughts. After his initial appearance, this ghost would occasionally visit and send me telepathic thoughts about painted ponies trotting around a ring of colorful shapes. I understood his thoughts because they were in the form of pictures, and I always felt a lot of light and love from him. As I grew older, his ghostly visits stopped.

By the time I was ready to start kindergarten, I would often spend weekends visiting my grandmother. The two of us shared a very special bond, and our visits were always filled with laughter and good food. On one of my trips to Grandma's apartment, I took out a family photo album. She sat next to me and told me about the people in the photos. When I saw the picture of the man with the bright blue eyes, standing in front of a tree, I pointed at it and asked, "Who's that?"

"He's your grandfather," she said. "He died before you were born. He came from England and went to work for the rodeo. You know, he even got a job setting up tents for the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show."

"I know him, Grandma. He used to visit me when I was a baby and tell me stories about the horses."

My grandmother smiled. I knew she didn't believe me. She merely added, "He loved telling stories about cowboys and Indians."

Years later, when I had begun my work as a medium, I remember finishing a reading and turning off my tape recorder. From the corner of my room, I heard a ghost say, Good boy, James. I'm proud of you, son! The kindly tone triggered the long-ago memory of the man with the bright blue eyes. I knew it was my grandfather. It was reassuring to know that he was still around watching over me.

A child's sensitivity

My ghostly visitations had become a special part of my life, but unlike the boy in The Sixth Sense, I was never afraid of seeing or hearing ghosts, because they appeared to me as orbs of light. It all seemed so natural to me, as if everyone could see what I could see.

However, I was a sensitive child. I remember being terribly shy, and I didn't say much to anyone besides my mother and siblings. Other than seeing ghosts, I spent a fairly normal childhood. I lived in a small house in a family neighborhood of Bayside, Queens. The block was always filled with kids outside playing kickball or riding bikes. As I grew older, my shyness faded away, and I became more talkative and outgoing. However, I was always acutely aware of other people and could sense how they would act before they did. I could also tell when someone was truthful and trustworthy or when someone was deceitful and insincere. I was never really close to any of my schoolmates; even my best friend didn't know I could see ghosts. Sometimes I felt like a stranger in a strange land. I realized that I was different and had to accept that fact.

It seemed that the only ones I trusted were the ghosts. They were always friendly and interested in my welfare. I looked forward to communicating with these beings because they were the only ones who truly knew who I was. They were my real friends, and I felt extremely safe having them around. My mother . . .

I'm a writer (that's my book below), a working hypnotherapist, and I do Past Life Regressions, so I'm not unbiased. But even though the title of James Van Praagh's "Ghosts Among Us" conjures up old movie images of wafting, misty entitles, his book gives a different sense of the "other side." He makes it clear that the "other side" is right here; you can reach out and touch it. His writing is clear, direct, and most of all encouraging and comforting. He assures his readers that they have access to hearing from dead loved ones if they allow themselves to take the time, learn to listen and connect. I love James's work because he helps make the "unreal" more concrete. And most importantly, he helps to make the real communications from "ghosts" taken seriously, even though they are easier to simply ignore. I recommend this book highly.

In his latest book "Ghosts Among Us", James Van Praagh takes the scare out of ghost stories. The average reader would enjoy this book, as an easy read with lots of information pertaining to where, when, why, and how "spirits" exist among us. For the more spiritually intuned, the information in the book that entails protection methods and how to perform certain spirit contact methods is very informative and enlightening. James Van Praagh is the greatest medium of our time, and for him to be willing and able to share his experiences with us, to help us become more intuned by his exercises and to help people to grow and heal at the mind, body, spirit level is his greatest gift.

I couldn't put the book down. I lost the love of my life from a brain tumor and through terrible circumstances. As I read this book I felt very close to him. It was though he was sitting right there with me as I read. Everyone can get something out of this book if you have an open mind and are interested in ghosts.

From the minute i started reading this book i could not put it down. I loved hearing about his life exsperiences and all the people he came in contact with. He is truely blessed to have this gift. I lost my father when i was 13 and never got to say goodbye. Just to have the thought of one day being able to see him again made me feel good inside . Thank you James for helping people like me have some hope and reassuring.

I applaud James Van Praagh on another wonderful bestseller! This book had me hooked from beginning to end. I have read many spiritual books for over 25+ years now and this one, in my opinion, is one of the best that I have read! It is written lovingly from the heart and, I believe, Mr. Praagh's best written work yet. It is filled with good accurate information and very easily read. He provides excellent advice, easy, effective instruction and techniques, clear definitions and wonderful anecdotes. Everything you wanted to know about spirits/ghosts! I especially appreciate the fact that Mr. Van Praagh lovingly stresses about how important it is to protect oneself from 'lower and/or more dense energies'. I am a big personal believer of this! I would highly recommend this book to all spiritual seekers of all levels! This one's a keeper!!

JVP has made spirit talk easy to understand and enjoyable to read. His actual examples capture the essence of the spirit world; his analysis of what the readings mean capture our attention and imagination. This is a great book to share with those loved ones whom have unanswered questions about life after life.

Couldn't put it down and it's great to read about people who had died in any situations. Would love to know how are they doing on other side.

It's comforting to know that this life I'm living right now is a school for the evolution of my soul. The veil over my eyes is no longer an enigma and for this I'm eternally grateful!

This book is interesting from the beginning to the end, he has taught me what happens with our loved ones when they make that transition called death to which I am not afraid and also to the strange sensations that used to feel now I know that my loved ones just want to communicate with me. A book to recommend.

I have yet to read beyond the ssmple, and though the book seems quite deft i did find an inacuracy in the introduction. Right now in this country is not the peak of intrest in ghosts. That particular tittle would belong to the mid ninetnth centery when an intire religion was built around the beleif in ghosts, spiritialisum. These books are tough, as a rational person you never quite know what to believ. I grew up in a haunted house, acording to my mothet anyway, she saw this woman all the time she said, this being the woman who had spent her life in ghe house and died there shortly before my family purchused the hose, this woman from what i heard sounded like some one who might haunt her childhood home, you see dhe never left it, never married and allways remained there even after her broghers and sisters moved on. Any i was only one the first and last time i encountered her, though i was one i was talking. It was the middle of the night and my mother woke to me crying she headed to my room to comfort me but upon entering discovered i was not in the crib, i was behind ghe closet door. My mother quite upset that her child was some how out of the crib and shut in a closet, asked me how i got in tbere "the old lady brought me in here" is what i told my mothef, i guess there was not much of any more resonable an explaination, no one else was in the house that night and this crib was not one i had ever gotten out of on my own before or after the incident. So was my only evidence of this ghost in my home, but even as a grown woman there was still some thing about the second floor of that house that gave me a chill ..willa.....
