Overview

Ghosts are the most common paranormal phenomena. They are fascinating and frightening to people of all ages. But are ghosts real, imagined, or the result of some weird aberration of time and space? Ghosts and Haunted Places explains the history, folklore, science, technology, and personal experience of ghosts and hauntings. Featuring accounts of documented cases, this fascinating book explores the different types of ghosts and their possible explanations, as well as the major figures and groups involved in ghost research. Special information is provided for readers who wish to conduct their own ghost investigations.

Throughout history, people have experienced amazing things that they could not fully explain. From encounters with strange creatures to sightings of mysterious flying lights, and from ghostly apparitions to visions of the future, these occurrences have fueled the idea that entities, powers, and dimensions may exist outside the boundaries of the everyday world. Each book in the Mysteries, Legends, and Unexplained Phenomena series examines one area of the paranormal. Designed to inspire readers' imaginations while informing them of the known facts, these books are written by occult experts with firsthand experience in paranormal investigations.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The "Mysteries, Legends, and Unexplained Phenomena" series for young adults is written from the perspective that, although occult phenomena cannot be explained or proved, they do exist. Starting with a Foreword by "one of the foremost authorities on the paranormal" who is also the author of this volume, ghosts are classified as dead people who have unfinished business, who do not yet know they are dead, have committed suicide or crimes, or are vampires jealous of the living. Tending to appear in certain recurring places and even schools, ghosts may manifest as sounds and smells, as filmy apparitions, or even as real people. Since the nineteenth century, believers have tried to find evidence of specters, as demonstrated by the establishment of a Society for Psychical Research in 1882. Readers are introduced to exotic spirits like banshees, ghost animals (huge black dogs are common), mysterious lights, and doppelganger. Theories are offered, including the particularly intriguing idea that bloody battles such as occurred at Gettysburg leave behind ghostly replays complete with sounds and lights. Since 1861, spirit images have been captured on film, though no photographic evidence has yet been authenticated, even in bizarre hauntings like the "Amityville Horror." For teens who need to get rid of a ghost, the author provides a list of traditional remedies (beans are useful). A final chapter focuses on the activities of amateur and professional ghost hunters. Thus far, results of investigations are nebulous and depend on interpretation by psychics, but paranormal enthusiast Guiley urges teens to "keep at it." Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
