Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Julia Beiker
Plagued with nightmares, Zack Parker must find out why this Native American keeps attacking him. These attacks have moved out of his dreams and into his reality. At first, Zack tries to conquer his nightmares by himself before discovering that his family tree holds the key as to why this ghost must seek his revenge on Zack. In this title Zack searches deep into his heart and finds the courage to let others help him. Each journey he takes leads him into a different direction, until all roads take him to the one person who can help him solve the identity of the Native American in his dream. Peschke's characters seem younger then those illustrated, even though they are driving in the story. It does not seem characteristic of a high student to become involved in such a story line. I realize this book was written more for older reluctant readers, but it falls flat. The story should appeal more to the young middle school reader, so the main character needs to be in that age group. I realize transportation would have been an issue, but again I think the story has too many scene changes that take the reader out of the story. The story is creative and shows young readers how to get more involved in their family tree, but it lacks substance.
