Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Laurie's frantically fun, if at times cartoonish, fifth Ghost Hunter mystery (after March 2010's Ghouls Gone Wild), M.J. Holliday and the Ghoul Getters cable TV show crew face some anxious moments at Dunlow, a haunted Irish castle, especially after their producer, Peter "Gopher" Gophner, goes missing. Treacherous tides can make it tricky to reach Dunlow, which is located on an island. Another challenge is the powerful castle phantom guarding the hidden treasure of Lord Ranald Dunnyvale, who ransomed some survivors of the Spanish Armada back in the 16th century for a hefty sum. Reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's bunch, Laurie's enthusiastic, punchy ghost busters make this paranormal series one teens can also enjoy. (Dec. 28)

    d**mned by faint praise

I loved the first book. The last two books were difficult to read because they were not quite up to par with the previous works by this authoress. I feel cheated about Dr. Sable's removal from the series (although not surprising considered the author's opinion of him). I miss Doc and I miss the thrill from the first book. Laurie's other series is still great and enjoyable. But the changes in this story line do not seem like an improvement.
This book and the two previous were almost impossible to read to the end.
I find this sad because I like Victoria Laurie and her psychic views.

    The whole series is great!

This is the fifth book in the series. Have read all 5 books in this series and it is one of my favorites. The characters are great and entertaining. The story while not the most original (Think ghost hunters) is one of the most interesting plot lines I've read about ghost hunters. I've found no flaws with this thrilling and somewhat creepy story about a haunted castle which can only be gotten to at high tide. Haunted by a phantom which caused at least one death so far MJ and crew go up against a dangerous ghost along with a couple criminal humans thrown in. Got my mom hooked with the first book, gave the first one to a friend to try after she saw this book and thought it looked good, and gave them to my sister after she read a little of one and didn't want to give them back. Plot twists are great as always.

    DISAPPOINTED AFTER THE THIRD BOOK

Really enjoyed the first three books and was really looking forward to the next one, until I could see the format changing in the third book. Their desire to go celebrity, fame, and, money status, from the happier more believable one, before the "Ghoul Getters" jazz. I think they were much better with the mix between M.J. and Dr. Sable, in her life and out on busts, and still attempt at a normal life with "Doc", and Gilly. It seemed she was more or less using her natural gift to help people with caring and skill. It made for a much more enjoyable and "want to read" light/mystery for me. The first two and three-quarter books were really griping. Would love to see a return.

    1/8/12

1/8/12 I really like Ms. Laurie's writing. I don't believe in all the psychic stuff, but they are fun reads. However, I've got to say that the main character, M.J., seems to fall a lot. I mean A LOT, and, she manages to hurt others when she does. M.J. comes off looking like a bumbling fool.

    Umm..... What just happened here?

I absolutely love Victoria Laurie's Ghost Hunter (M.J.) Series but seriously something was up with this book. First off, am I the only one who thought that the first and second books happened within months of eachother and that the third one followed pretty closely? Maybe it's just me but when M.J. stated that her and Steven had dated for nearly two years I was a little thrown off. Anyway, my gosh! Were the characters in this book incredibly annoying (especially M.J. and Gilley) they were not themselves at all. Of course, one of my new favorite characters, Gopher, had to go get kidnapped and stuff, so he couldn't even save this story. Seriously, I loved the plot of this story (haunted castle, if you don't leave by a certain time you're pretty much screwed) it was a great idea it just wasn't executed well. I would rather have read about Meg, Kim, and John fighting the demon/ ghost thing because they probably would have handled it a lot better than M.J. did. She became such a baby in this book, everything was too scary or too hard for her it got old really fast. And then she had the nerve to yell at Gilley for whining like a baby.... umm hello? I felt incredibly bad for Heath in this book having to deal with both M.J.'s and Gilley's whining and then having his arm pretty much broken because M.J. had to have a panic attack (doing the thing she does on a regular basis) Yeah, poor Heath. Overall, a mediocre book in a great series, hopefully, the next one will have our heroes back to their usual awesome selves.

    LOVE HER

I am a HUGE fan of Victoria Laurie! I read her other series on a whim recently and enjoyed them so much I had to get this one too! Her characters are so much fun and make for a very enjoyable read. The plots are very thought out, but fun and funny at the same time. They are easy reads that are truely fantastic. Thank you for these books Victoria and I hope you continue to write more!!

Spirits and Ghosts and Phantoms, Oh My!

Author Victoria Laurie comes up with an intriguing story idea in "Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls." A haunted castle, hidden treasure, murderous phantom, and a history of tragedies befalling previous ghost- and treasure-hunters are a formula for a great mystery. The formula fell a little flat, though, as the there was no real character development and the lack of a subplot left me dizzy with the only action yo-yo-ing between only two locations. This mystery could have been better written: a few of the clues were so blatant I was screaming at the characters to wake up and realize they were inches from solving the puzzle 100 pages before the end of the book. All in all, a good Saturday afternoon read. I will definitely be waiting for the next in the series. This series has only gotten better and I can't wait to see what's up next for MJ and Gilley!

    Disappointing

I love Victoria Laurie her characters come to life for me however, this book seemed to be a "deadline - quick fill the pages" rush. There were too many I, me, and my's at the expense of the other characters. Get back to the light ghosts/heavy ghoul, not every book need be a life threatening demon. I will continue to read anything Ms. Laurie writes, but this was not my favorite.

In this ongoing series, ghost hunters find more ghosts than they can easily manage. It is a swash-buckling romp of a paranormal tale,
