Bill Lewis thought his troubles were over. As a child he had survived the Great Depression on the family farm and now had a new wife and the hope of an exciting life together. But World War II puts his plans on hold and he joins the 202nd Military Police Company attached to II Corps. For nearly three years he serves in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy with the brave men of the "Speedy Two."

The daily grind of maintaining order in the midst of wartime chaos puts Bill in the mix with some notable leaders, celebrities, and historic sites. Confrontations with death are challenges he survives, but what knocks him down is his homecoming.

Ironically it is the beauty of war-torn Italy that awakens a hidden desire, leading him to become a nationally recognized watercolor impressionist.

    A must read. Great book on combat MPs.

    Bill Lewis' book `G.I. Blue' on the storied 202nd Military Police Company's service in World War II gives the veteran, and non veteran both, insights into what combat MP operations were really like. A recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for heroism, Bill joined the 202nd in North Africa as a replacement and served with them through the landing at Sicily and on up the boot of Italy with the II Corps. Interweaving his strong background of family with the challenges of war time MP operations, Bill's story of dogged service and survival is well told. Interspersed with the everyday and the horror of war are some surprises and `rest of the story' recollections. Not to drop the reader at the conclusion of hostilities, Bill details his return home and the hardship and challenges that he had to overcome, eventually becoming a well known and respected watercolor impressionist. The 202nd is one of the most storied MP companies in the U.S Army. Organized in World War I, the company has seen active service through World War II, the Cold War in France, stateside at Ft. Sheridan, and West Germany, then Iraq in 1991 and throughout the War on Terror with deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. Captain Acosta and the men & women of the 202nd continue to serve today on the unit's second deployment to Afghanistan. The veterans of the 202nd maintain a website containing over 1,000 pictures of the units' service to include hundreds from their service in World War II at the web site located page xii (see book preview for address).
