Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-A good introduction to the advantages and problems of animals that are oversized. (A goliath beetle, as heavy as a baseball, can barely fly.) The opening chapter presents an overview of the topic; succeeding chapters discuss the characteristics, habitats, and abilities and challenges of specific giant mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, arachnids, and aquatic invertebrates. Each chapter title has a different colored background; terms that can be found in the glossary are highlighted in the same color. The final section gives examples of giant creatures to be found in the U.S. Except for a dark print of a dinosaur ant, the full-color photographs are clear, large, and complementary to the text. Whether intentional or not, page numbers are so large that they run off the bottom of each page, and some young readers may find them difficult to read. Nevertheless, this is a worthy addition. Children will want to read it to satisfy their curiosity as well as for school assignments.-Karen M. Kearns, Environmental Resource Center, Atlanta, GA
