Ideal for any fan of Poetry

The Giant Book of Poetry spans every type and era of poem imaginable, hours upon hours of entertainment. Not only that there's explanation and definitions of some more difficult/out of fashion words at the bottom of every page. Roetzheim really did pick the tried and true winners. Most times I appreciate his analysis of a poem but other times I read into something differently. Maybe that just sparks a more in depth look at it from another point of view. The topics are sorted out well so whatever your mood may be it's easily accessible. The price is well worth the number of pages and content. You get almost every poem you can think of plus almost an advanced English lesson regarding meter, feet, syllables and whatnot. It's very useful and he makes it easy to comprehend. Only one complaint here, some authors (like Gertrude Stein for instance) don't get their deserved number of works published in this book. She only has one and it's not her best. Besides that, I plan on keeping this book until the end of time. Truly, it's an overall convenient, well put together collection perfect for readers that may only dabble in poetry. You won't be disappointed.

    Be careful! Not for everyone.

Sadly, this book full of great poetry and poets alike is tainted by the editors poor choice of poets he allows in his book. My parents bought this book for my 14 yo daughter after a brief look at the poets listed and a recommendation by the book store. Well they were certainly shocked when I found several perverse poems written by a Sharon Olds and some others and also a few sketches apparently by the editor of fully naked women. Not what you want to give to your granddaughter! Hope this review prevents some others from making the same mistake.
