Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
What in the world is pictured on the cover of this book? Is it a bug? A science fiction character? No, it's an isopod, a crustacean measuring two and a half feet long that hitched a ride on a submarine exploring the deep ocean in 2010. Wow! These isopods, sometimes called "monster bugs," live in very deep sea habitats, so it is hard for humans to study them. Judging from the book, part of Raintree's "Creatures of the Deep" series, studying these critters is well worth it. Easy to understand text describes what life is like in a deep sea habitat for these diverse creatures (crustaceans can look very different but have one thing in common: two sets of antennae). Deep sea habitats aren't the only ones in which isopods live. Remember that childhood fascination with pill bugs, the ones that roll into a ball? Isopods! Whether "crafty" is the right word or not, these animals are amazing. Marine crustaceans include crabs, sea-slaters that live under rocks and have seven pairs of legs, plus aquatic isopods that closely resemble their terrestrial cousins. The book, with its lively format and colorful illustrations, includes information about eating behavior, reproduction and avoiding predators. Especially interesting are pages discussing ways scientists study deep sea isopods. Young readers will have to pay particular attention to subject matter, i.e., is this particular creature an isopod, crustacean, neither, both or what? The book's main focus seems to ramble a bit. The book includes glossary, index, book and web site lists, as well as information about saving deep sea habitats. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
