Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This combination science book and easy reader presents basic information about large lizards. It is part of the series "All Aboard Science Reader, Station Stop 2." As such, the text relies primarily on sight words and short sentences. On occasion, compound sentences vary the rhythm. When words not normally part of a child's natural oral language are included, a short definition and pronunciation guide are added. The Komodo dragon is given the most comprehensive treatment with fifteen pages out of a total of forty-eight. The remaining text introduces the reader to seven more lizards in segments of two- to six pages each. The illustrations are as lush as the tropical lands they depict. The book's concept would be strengthened if the visual device of comparing a Komodo dragon to a car were repeated for the other lizards. For seven of the eight lizards, size is described only with words like huge or giant. An continuing illustration or visual comparison for each lizard would help to underscore the theme of the book, "giant." In addition, because this is a science book, a simply written bibliography or reference section pointing an interested reader to four or five other sources or perhaps a video or movie, would be helpful. This is a useful informational book on an interesting zoological subject. Because it is meant for children who are reading with help, the text could be enhanced to include material an adult might use to point out how introductory material could be the beginning of additional learning on any subject. 2005, Grosset & Dunlap/Penguin Young Readers Group, and Ages 6 to 8.
