Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
With its rebus approach to reading with pictures (and the word underneath) inserted into the sentences, this title in the "Go, Diego Go!" series (book #10) is a Level 1 reader. Based on the Dora TV series characters, we see Diego in a yellow submarine being urged to rescue some sea creatures that have been trapped in a coral "cage." As Diego dives to the rescue, additional tension is added by the threat of the local volcanoes. Counting down to the blast of the volcanoes, we see "5-4-3-2-1 BLOW!" The volcanoes are anthropomorphized as are all of the underwater creatures. The volcanoes have happy little faces and do not seem dangerous until they "blow." Diego ultimately needs the help of the eight-armed octopus to accomplish the rescue mission. The octopus squirts its ink to hide the sub from some curious whales, catches falling rocks (eight of them, of course), and employs all eight arms to dig a tunnel under the coral formation so the dolphin, sea turtles, and sea horses can escape. Youngsters will not quibble with the idea that the "trapped" creatures could have easily escaped on their own. The educational aspects of counting and predicting the storyline will serve to balance the thin plot. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
