Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Inside this bright, fun book (which is preceded by titles about pets, bugs, vehicles, and shapes) photographs and word clues let readers guess the mystery meals that are concealed by large flaps. “You start with two slices of bread,” offers one clue. “Then you spread peanut butter on one side,” reads the other. When lifted, a full-page flap opposite with a closeup of a jar of jelly reveals the answer. The familiar foodstuffs and ample clues should make for a rewarding guessing game for beginning readers of all appetites. Available simultaneously: Giant Pop-Out Ocean. Ages 2–4. (May)
Kirkus Reviews
A dolphin, fish, a crab, an octopus, seashells and a jellyfish are introduced, each after a couple of questions and clues both photographic and textual. "I have a big head, but no legs! / There are suction cups under my arms. / What am I? (Here are two of my eight arms!)" Photographs reveal body parts; open the gatefold and a complete picture of "AN OCTOPUS!" folds out dramatically. As both guessing game and introduction to shore and ocean life for very young children, this operates pretty well and even delivers a few safety tips (jellyfish sting; don't go in the ocean without a lifeguard on duty), though it's likely not to have much staying power. It is, however, more successful than its companion, Giant Pop-out Food (ISBN: 978-0-8118-7478-6), which introduces foodstuffs so common (peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich, pizza), it feels silly. (Pop-up. 2-4)
