Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Another book written in conjunction with The American Museum of Natural History, this title for Level 2 readers should please kids, parents, and teachers. Giant squids, after all, have fascinated folks back to Jules Verne's day. For this book, along came an actual 25-foot male squid, albeit a dead one, found in fishermen's nets. He'll soon be a museum display, after thorough study by marine biologist Neil Landman and fellow scientists. Kids will love learning about giant squids, which have the largest eyeballs in the animal kingdom--the size of soccer balls. Growing as long as 60 feet, they live a mile below the ocean's surface. Take a brisk 15-minute walk, and that's how far down a squid lives! The author does a good job of describing the physical aspects of a giant squid, especially the tough beak in its mouth, which can easily bite through a steel ship's cable. And yes, they do battle sperm whales; their beaks have been found in the bellies of dead whales. This title is a fine addition for home and school libraries, where the importance of non-fiction cannot be overestimated. So many young readers want only that which is "real." At long last, factual literature has come into its own. 1999, Grosset & Dunlap, Ages 5 to 9, $13.89 and $3.99. Reviewer: Joan Carris
