Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
From the stonehenges of the British Isles to the mounds of North America, ancient human alterations of natural landscape still hold mysteries for us to ponder. Chapters in this introductory book discuss the so-called "prehistoric" era to which these artifacts belong—mounds, tables and artificial hills; megaliths, and circles of wood and stone. The information is competently presented, and the photographs will evoke young readers' interest. The introductory chapter is disappointing in its scope, glossing completely over the astronomical and engineering conundrums in many of these sites that entrance scholars and skeptics alike. 2000, Millbrook Press, $24.90. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-A presentation of various megalithic monuments, primarily those in Europe. Earth mounds, standing stones, artificial hills, and henges are described, and solid examples are given. Unexciting photos and diagrams are included, but not a location map. The lack of a source bibliography casts doubt on such statements as, "There is said to be an arrangement of standing stones-in the highlands of Tibet-." The text is straightforward, if pedestrian, and is scattered with highlighted boxes on various monuments. The earth mounds of North America warrant a scant two paragraphs, wood circles three, but the rest of the world (except for Nabta in Egypt) is more modestly treated. For researchers seeking information on Stonehenge, Carnac, or other Neolithic monuments, and for the theories as to why they were constructed and for what purpose, this will prove an adequate, if dry, resource.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
