Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
The deep sea is the final frontier on Earth. Many unknown and mysterious organisms and animals live in these deep waters. Scientists estimate there may be over nine million species yet to be discovered in the oceans. Exploring the oceans requires special equipment. There is incredible pressure, little light, and very cold temperatures in the deep ocean. Scientists have designed special chambers to explore these deep waters. Exploring the depths, one group of scientists discovered gaps in the ocean floor spewing very hot water. They discovered many life forms living near these vents. One of these creatures was a giant tube worm. It has a red plume at the top of its body and can grow to eight feet long. Life in the deep sea is very difficult because of the great pressure and lack of light. Some deep sea creatures have bioluminescence, similar to the chemical substance that lights up a firefly. Deep-sea life by the vents is especially challenging because the vents switch off and on. The tube worms cannot live if the vents are not spewing hot water or die if the water temperature gets too hot. The book is well illustrated with large, informative photographs of tube worms and other creatures that live by the deep sea vents. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
