School Library Journal
Gr 1-3 Although Gib Morgan was a real oilman, Dewey has combined some of the tall tales surrounding him with those attributed to imaginary characters such as Kemp Morgan and Paul Bunyan. This meshing of real life and illusion creates an irresistible tale that traverses the United States and then jumps to South America. Illustrated in colors as vivid as the tales being told, the text is set off from the complementary drawings by a bordered white space. Short sentences concentrated in brief mini-tales allow easy reading for primary age youngsters to enjoy at their own pace. The crowd-pleasing boa constrictor, Strickie, brings the tales to a rib-tickling close. American folklore that is accessible to primary grade readers. Cathy Woodward, Lima City Schools, Ohio
