Overview

On June 17,1992, a man awakes in his hotel room in Arlington, Texas, his memory largely gone. On a lamp table next to his bed he sees a black book, 'GIDEONS BIBLE' printed in gold letters on the cover. He suspects the book is his so he chooses the name Gideon. After spending a week in his room reading it, he becomes particularly drawn to the 'Old' part, a text filled with stories of characters committing all sorts of dreadful acts, but nevertheless very exciting. They are rascals whose actions are frequqently questionable but actors he finds compelling. It keeps him turning the pages and he feels very connected to them. The 'New' part has a very different tone, about a man with no apparent faults that suffers a very brutal and unsettling death. He is nothing like any of the characters in the 'Old' part. A television show that Gideon turns on features a Reverend Billy Pickett, a man Gideon finds disturbing. The Reverend Billy bellows that Jesus knows everything about him and everything he does. A subsequent offerning that Gideon calls up on his television on the 'Adult Channel' features a film entitled 'Dorna Dles Dallas' Gideon soon realizes 'Dorna' is not the travel documentary that will familiarize him with the hotel area in which he stays. Following Dorna's performance, Dorna says "I know who you are, what you want, and you know where to find me." Excited by the prospect that both Jesus and Dorna hold the clues to his identity and past, Gideon sets ou in his quest around the lower 48 searching for one or both of them. With a chlildlike innocence he becomes prey to a host of con artists and hucksters all more than happy to fleece him of a seemingly bottomless numbered bank account. It's an account that has been set up so he can accesss and ATM card he finds in his wallet. It is a nameless piece of plastic that becomes his sole hope of a link to information that could provide him with clues to his identity and past.
