From Barnes & NobleThe Barnes & Noble Review
This offering by Anne McCaffrey is aptly titled. A Gift of Dragons is the perfect gift for fantasy fans of all ages. The special volume contains three previously published stories, as well as a brand-new Pern adventure, and includes dozens of captivating illustrations by Hugo-nominated artist Tom Kidd. In "The Smallest Dragonboy," Keevan is the youngest of all the dragonrider candidates, and his dream is to impress a dragon. But when a bully beats him up just before the dragon eggs hatch, his lifelong goal is put in jeopardy. "The Girl Who Heard Dragons" tells the story of Aramina, a girl with special powers that put her whole family in danger. "Runner of Pern" chronicles the life of Tenna, a pretty young runner who fatefully meets a Lord Holder's son. "Ever the Twain," tells the tale of twins, Neru and Nian, who must cope with growing up and, inevitably, separation.
As with most McCaffrey books, this collection is suitable for readers of all ages. In fact, I would highly recommend A Gift of Dragons to young fantasy fans in particular because all the stories revolve around adolescent protagonists who achieve their goals because of determination, inner strength, and a strong sense of honor.
