So much of what we hear about fathers is negative--e.g., they won't pay child support, they are abusive and violent--that we tend to forget that the majority of fathers (and grandfathers) are pretty good guys, doing their best to take care of their families. Verny has compiled short stories and poems by men and women about their relationship with and memories of their fathers or grandfathers. There are none of the stereotypical ``my Dad took me hunting and I became a man'' stories. Instead, these stories generally deal with the mundane activities of everyday life--frequently the times when the most important lessons are learned. Some of the stories deal with the joys of childhood, others with the pain surrounding the loss of one's father or grandfather. Some of the men are wonderful; others are unpleasant. Readers of this powerful book will find themselves remembering their own fathers and grandfathers, and, if they are fathers, reflecting upon their relationship with their children.
