T i n y S h i n y

Wakes a sleepyhead.

It's morning! Time for Sam to get ready for school. After a sniffy-whiffy eat-up and a splashy-flashy wash-up, Sammy's off into the busy-whizzy wildness of a Monday morning.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
For Sammy the preschooler, there are a host of ways to describe the excitement that comes with the arrival of Monday morning. The sun's "skipping through the window" starts in motion "a tiny-shiny wake-up/ It's a tiny-shiny day." As Sammy and his mother make their way to school through the "busy whizzy wildness" of the city to gear up for another work week, "It's a whizzy-tizzy speed-up/ It's a whizzy-tizzy day." Music time, when Sammy and his classmates get to "clomp-stomp, clomp-stomp" around the room with percussion instruments, turns Monday into "a jingle-jangle juggle-up/It's a jingle-jangle day." As Carlstrom's (the Jesse Bear books) infectiously singsong text dances in readers' ears (some phrases are sure to become firmly lodged in youngsters' vocabularies), Sweet's (Charlotte in Paris) gleeful childlike watercolors harmonize with bright colors and devil-may-care perspectives (the rush-hour cars and trucks look as if they're rappelling up the roads). Characters appear as painted cutouts pasted onto the scene, an approach that brings to mind preschool art projects. Monday mornings may make grown-ups groan, but Carlstrom and Sweet know that children see a day filled with all the things that make life worthwhile-from noisy trucks to eager friends to hugs and kisses from Mommy. Ages 2-5. (Oct.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
This busy little book will jump-start reluctant sleepyheads who need to be up and doing. From the moment Sam's kitty climbs onto his bed to lick his toes awake, Sam's Monday is underway and accelerating. Colorful, gravity-defying drawings match Sam's pace as he breakfasts and heads off with Mama to school. Bouncy wordplay captures the "busy, whizzy wildness" of the city streets and the "jingle-jangle" chaos in his classroom. The story pauses just once to take a breath as Mama stoops to kiss Sam goodbye at the school door. Carlstrom intends to invite children and parents to play with language and, indeed, giggles are guaranteed as reader and listener attempt the tongue-twisting rhymes. Children in daycare or preschool will enjoy recognizing the predictable routines and the surprises punctuating Sam's day. Parents may also find the book helpful in prompting the less verbal child to share the events of her day as she settles down at home. Recommended for larger collections. 2003, Alfred A Knopf, Ages 2 to 6.

PreS-Gr 1-Another gem from Carlstrom. It's Monday morning and Sammy is about to get up and face the day. "Scrit scrat," his kitten enters his room and tickles his toes to wake him. Then Sammy smells breakfast from the kitchen, "S i z z l e D r i z z l e." And finally, it's hide-and-seek when Mom comes in to wake him, "Peek out, squeak out /Silly-willy squawks." There is lots of wordplay and rhyme, with rich, playful, and splashy colors, as Sammy eats, puts on his clothes, brushes his teeth, and finally pops out into the big city with Mom. "Bing bang, bing bang/Busy whizzy wildness" as they head to school. Lively, child-friendly illustrations entice viewers to pore over the pages, which depict kids waving hello from school windows, giving hugs and kisses good-bye, and classmates playing musical instruments. Readers will agree with Sammy, "It's a giggle-wiggle day!" Great for a first day of school read-aloud or to introduce phonics.-Wanda Meyers-Hines, Ridgecrest Elementary School, Huntsville, AL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
In an ebullient burst of playful language, Carlstrom's tale whisks readers through a youngster's Monday routine. From the first glimmer of sunlight that awakens Sammy, to a raucous recounting of his preschool experiences, fanciful rhyming word pairs frolic across the pages, entreating readers to join in the fun. A fast-paced tempo combines with tongue-twisting verses for a read-aloud format that is perfect for preschooler participation: "Clomp-stomp, clomp-stomp / Noisily we're marching / Clashing, click-sticks / Pounding on the drum / Sing it, ring it / Monday moning music." Sweet's buoyant illustrations reflect the vivaciousness of the verses. Cartoon-style drawings come in an array of vibrant colors; tangerine orange walls complement the lemon bright floors in Sammy's kitchen, while Sammy wears eye-catching primary hues of red and blue. This boisterous tale is just the thing to chase away the doldrums and start Monday, or any other day, with a bang. (Picture book. 2-5)
