Overview

The operas of William S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan still have many admirers, even in the 21st century, but they surely got a welcome boost from Mike Leigh's touching 1999 film Topsy-Turvy, which tells of the creation of The Mikado. As delightful as the excerpts from the opera were in the film, however, there is no substitute for the real thing -- and The Mikado performed by the legendary D'Oyly Carte Opera Company (founded in 1875) is as real as it gets. This 1973 recording was made in celebration of John Reed's 20th anniversary with the company, and though the great comic baritone's voice is no longer as fresh as it once was, his singing of Ko-Ko is as stylish as ever. Other standouts include Kenneth Sandford's Pooh-Bah, Valerie Masterson's Yum-Yum, Peggy Ann Jones's Pitti-Sing, and Colin Wright's Naniki-Poo. Effervescent playing by the Royal Philharmonic is an added delight. No dialogue, alas, but the musical score is performed complete.
