After promising a distraught mother he'd find her missing children, Detective Vince O'Mally discovers their mutilated corpses in an abandoned house. Tormented by images of the horrific crime scene, Vince is forced to quit the case by his superiors and take a vacation. Instead, Vince heads to Dilmun, a small town in upstate New York, to follow up a seemingly insignificant lead. At the town's tiny police department, Vince meets Holly Newman, a pretty but troubled woman who has never recovered from losing her own sister to a child killer more than twenty years ago. Convinced the cases are connected, Vince pushes Holly to recall long buried memories; in the process, he falls in love with her. With a killer on their trail and another child's abduction augmenting their sense of urgency, Holly and Vince team up with the local police and the FBI to track down the killer. Shayne's (The Texas Brand, etc.) haunting tale is intricately woven, and her quirky supporting characters including a retired horror movie star, his mysterious young niece and an omnipresent Native American physician will capture the reader's sympathy. A moving mix of high suspense and romance, this haunting Halloween thriller will propel readers to bolt their doors at night. (Oct. 2) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

In a departure from the fantasy element of earlier novels, Ms. Shayne has delivered one of her best yet, a novel rich with spine-tingling mystery and an abundance of suspense.

Syracuse police detective Vince O¿Mally oversteps the bounds of his profession and becomes too involved in his latest case. Two children are found murdered, and the only clue he discovers is an old library edition of THE GINGERBREAD MAN. That one clue leads him to Dilmun, New York, a small town on Cayuga Lake.

There, Vince encounters Holly Newman, last-known borrower of THE GINGERBREAD MAN, and secretary to the Dilmun Chief of Police. Vince and Holly¿s paths keep crossing, and he senses that she could provide a connection to his recent case. Holly, deftly portrayed as the fragile, yet strong heroine, can¿t decide whether she is attracted to or disturbed by the very forthright Vince.

Suddenly, many of Holly¿s old fears return as strange happenings grip the town of Dilmun leaving Holly and Vince in the eye of the storm. With a truly skillful manifestation of clues and possible suspects, the reader is kept guessing as much as any of the players. As Holly and Vince get closer to the truth and to each other, an eerily familiar series of events forces Holly to come to terms with her past. Can they catch the killer before it is too late?

In some novels, the suspense is over long before the book is finished. Not so in this case, as the answer to ¿who done it?¿ is made known when it should be, at the novel¿s conclusion. The nail-biting conclusion will leave readers white-knuckled for some time to come.

True romance readers won¿t be disappointed, either, as the love scenes become more memorable because they are not overplayed. With sizzling love scenes and suspense that just won¿t quit, Ms. Shayne has created a praise-worthy novel truly deserving of its classification as romantic suspense.

I read this years ago and the story stayed with me. The characters are strong and well developed, as is the story. It has the elements of classic suspense with modern sensibilty, creating adeliciously dark and entertaining read. This is definitely a keeper.

Usually I have not found this caliber of a book for free. Maggie Shayne has written a psychological thriller based on child abduction and a small towns desire to sweep it under and forget about it. This book holds your attention from page 1. The characters are believable and you actually start to bond with them and actually feel their pain. I do recommend this book anh hope there is a follow up.

Excellent story--well-written! Shayne weaves a story about a survivor of an attempted abduction, though she's had to live with the fact that she couldn't save her sister from the same fate. Twists and turns keep you guessing and anticipating what might happen next. Who might be the villain, and who ends up a hero? I gave it one less star because the detailed sex scene seemed unnecessarily graphic for this type of story. However, I very much enjoyed the tension and the story. Recommended!

Gingerbread man was a good read, strange in the beginning and very gruesome at times. I still like the story line, character's and being drawn in on each scene. I was at ONE point yelling to Stay back it's not safe. ;) It keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who this person is, how they can be so evil. I almost deleted it, then picked it up and kept on reading. The kidnapping and killing of precious children makes me very angry, yet I finished the book.

It's a free book so to be honest, my expectations weren't high. Luckily I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Don't get me wrong, there were some minor spelling and grammar errors most of which looked like the typos you get when you type too fast. The plot kept my interest although halfway through I was sure I knew who the killer was (I was right). The thing I enjoyed the most about this book were the characters. Personally, I love flawed characters; not train wrecks but human. These characters are perfect in that they are imperfect. Holly can be a hysterical mess and moody but can also be strong and a fighter. Detective Vince has a weakness for helping broken women even at the cost of his own mental well being. Overall, I enjoyed this book and recommended it to anyone who wants to spend a cold night curled up with a good book.

There were only a few typos but it was amazing to read. Its 248 pages with a preview to another one of her books at the end. Which I am about to purchase. This has some rough content but sometimes thats life. Just when you think you know who did it.....boy do you get sucker punched. Its a great book!

Some editing is needed. The errors are not major nor many, just annoying. The story is captivating; I didn't want to put it down.

The Gingerbread Man was a gripping page turner. Exciting action, suspense, with a little romance and heart a warming tale. This book was low on the decription of graphic detail of the violence, which was decent when talking about harm to children. Cursing was milder than most books today. Sexual content was kept modertate. I really enjoyed reading this book. I look forward to reading more from the author.

This was my first book by Maggie Shayne. It was picked by one of our members in my book club. I have throughly enjoyed this book. Suspense, tragedy and love all in one.  Holly is a girl that is haunted by the loss of her younger sister Ivy. Holly blames herself for Ivy having been kidnapped and not doing enough to save her. Un know to Holly a detective not too faraway is working a case that will bring them together. Holly only wants to forget the day her sister was taken from her. She wants to just try and live a normal life as possible. Though she knows that counting and having a ritual routine is far from normal. Detective O'Mally has seen things that no one should ever see in his career. But he is determined to solve this case he is working on no matter what his Chief says. O'Mally is so close that he knows it won't be long before the real killer in his case will be brought to justice. Mix in a famous actor and his niece and things really get interesting.  I so enjoyed this book and Maggie Shayne's style of writing. Can't wait to start another her in series.
