Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for GIRAFFES CAN'T DANCE

"Andreae's rhyming text has a jaunty rhythm that's likely to spark interest in the read-aloud crowd." -PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Exuberance is the key to this addition to the counting book genre. Based on the characters first seen in Giraffes Can’t Dance, this tabbed board book opens with Gerald the Giraffe struggling to get his feet to cooperate. Each double-page spread in this toddler-sized treasure introduces two numbers with rhymed couplets that describe the antics of the next “number” of dancing animals. Number recognition is reinforced while children are exposed to some lovely, descriptive vocabulary words, as in: “Three high-kicking hyenas, springing through the air./Four rocking rhinos, dancing with real flair.” The semi-circular tabs attached to each page show the featured animal’s picture so that readers can quickly turn to their favorite page; this is a nice touch to stimulate small motor control. Making “flamenco” rhyme with “the tango” is a bit rough, but the other rhymes are “really smooth” and “in the groove.” The “[e]ight bold baboons, getting in the groove” are having a really great time, and readers will too. All of the animals are seen on the last spread, with Gerald contorting his long legs in an amazingly, graceful leap. “Ten happy jungle friends, who all just love to dance.” Read this aloud and follow it with some “zippy” music to get those little listeners up and dancing around with exhilaration. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan; Ages 0 to 4.
