Children's Literature - Heidi Quist
In addition to the expected information about giraffes, such as their height, weight, territory, eating habits, etc., Murray provides lots of information about the continent of Africa, including its origins, its human and other animal inhabitants, weather and trees. She then goes into more detail about all aspects of the giraffe, including the length and number of bones in the neck—even the neck’s weight—interesting facts about the knobs on giraffes’ heads, their skin patterns, and even their tongues. Children will also appreciate a common feature in this “African Animals” series—information about babies and about their social lives. Not surprisingly, the book concludes with a page of interesting facts, a glossary, index, and how to access more information through ABDO’s website. The book includes good quality photography, with nice close-ups as well as beautiful herd shots, and distant individual shots to highlight their beauty at sunset and sunrise, and against the African savannah. Reviewer: Heidi Quist; Ages 7 to 12.
