Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lilliam Oliva Collmann
Part of the series "Ciencia asombrosa (Amazing Science)," this book successfully presents in words and illustrations the story of the planets and their relationship in space as part of the solar system. The earth as part of that system, the book explains, is like a spaceship that takes you on a space journey every day. With the support of brilliant illustrations, the book covers key information about the planets: their movement around the sun, their classification as rocky or gaseous, and the unique features of each. It cleverly organizes the information about the planets by describing them in pairs and in ascending order of closeness to the sun. This technique allows the young reader to note contrasts and similarities among the planets and also better retain the fascinating details provided about each one. With each paired description, the author highlights an additional curious fact about the planets. For example, what appears to be an immense dark stain on Jupiter, the size of two earths put together, is actually a storm that has been there for more than 300 years. The book is complete with a table of contents, an index, instructions for creating a game based on the planets, an additional page of interesting facts, a glossary, and a page with library and Internet resources.
