Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
There is a great interest in helping girls' transition into young women with self-confidence and optimism. Numerous studies are sited frequently in this "self help" book for girls ten to sixteen years old. Major issues addressed are gender expectations and gender bias. Girls are quoted, relating their various experiences and concerns. This technique helps to personalize the material and brings together many voices of the girls themselves. Other issues addressed in a similar manner are the pressure to be perfect and the resolution of family conflicts. A very kid friendly book, it is designed with hip graphics. The material is presented in a sensitive way that stimulates thought and dialogue. Girls will have a better understanding of the potential problems and will understand that they are not alone. An extensive list of resources for girls and families is included.
School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-Supportive titles for teens struggling with being female as the new century dawns. Lound shares girls' comments as they relate the problems of growing up female in any family. She explores gender roles of today and yesterday while addressing expectations, biases, and relationships and offers lots of sound advice. Steiner does a good job of promoting female participation in any sport. She is quick to point out that simply participating in the sport for the love of the game is enough; girls should not feel pressure to reach Olympian heights or beat the boys. She discusses body image and mentors. Both texts flow well and the authors' decidedly post-feminist voices come through loud and clear. Bold sidebars highlight a comment or quote. Upbeat additions.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
