Katie has a hard time making friends because of her telekinetic powers—the people around her just don’t understand. Katie knows she’s different, but she would never try to hurt anyone. When she finds herself in trouble, Katie seeks out other kids who have silver eyes like hers. But can her newfound friends help her? Should they use their special powers? Will they be forced to?

This beloved classic from Willo Davis Roberts, originally published in hardcover in 1980, is now available as an Aladdin paperback and will enthrall a new generation of eager readers.

A 10-year-old girl, who has always looked different from other children, discovers that she not only has unusual powers but that there are others like her.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Katie Welker is a quiet girl who would never hurt a fly. In her loneliness, she learned to entertain herself by reading and moving things via telekinesis. You see, she has a very special gift. She can move things without touching them. She doesn't know why; she just does. Living with her grandma she must keep her talents hidden. When her granny passes away, Katie's mother retrieves her and whisks her away from her country lifestyle to live in a small city apartment with neighbors who find her strange because she has silver eyes and a blank stare. Katie makes a few new friends, including Mrs. M, Lobo the cat and Jackson Johnson, the paper boy. She learns how she may have acquired her special gifts by eavesdropping on her mom and her mom's boyfriend. It is this revelation that gives Katie the idea to find three others just like her. This, she thinks, will alleviate her loneliness. Katie's journey begins. A quick fun read, this story will have readers turning the pages anxiously to see if Katie will succeed. Roberts shows readers that we all have differences, although some of us are afraid of what we don't understand. In the end, readers will learn that our differences make us all special, which is always a good thing. Reviewer: Kristi Bernard

    Well-Written, and "age appropriate" ;)

It's a great book that may inspire young readers to go beyond the reading that is allowed to them. As an avid reader myself, I found this book to be interesting and a great story. For advanced readers(fast readers that can comprehend what they have read), it's a quick but enjoyable read.

I have my suspicions that there will be another book in the making as it leaves two threads up in the air waiting to be tied.

But if this is a one-shot book, it's still well done and can be left at that. The reader can make their own decision about where they go.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

One of my favorite childrens novels

I think I was probably 10 or 11 the first time I read this book, I loved it from the very start. I was already a big reader but the way that the author describes the love of reading made only made me want to read more. The story is captivating and the characters are realistic and relatable. I still enjoy reading this book even now as a college senior.

Best Book I ever read as a child!

Its about a girl that finds out her strange powers are the result of a chemical that her mother was exposed to when she was pregnant. She also finds out there are more kids with the same powers and she sets out to find them. Before she leaves her house to meet one of them she has tracked down she accidentally cuts her finger leaving a spot of blood on the kitchen counter. When her mom arrives home and sees her missing she thinks only the worst! She calls the police and they start to search for her. Its a very wonderful story about a young girl set out to find who she really is and why she has these strange powers
