Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-This episodic beginning chapter book is certain to capture the interest of readers who want a belly laugh or two. Maxine, Girl Wonder, and her twin brothers find that their well-intentioned solutions to problems around the house are not always workable-or welcome. For example, when the backyard fence collapses, or the kitchen floats in soap bubbles, their unamused mother becomes cranky. Not until their unplanned antics foil thieves at the supermarket are the children fully appreciated. The last chapter concludes their adventures on a satisfying, upbeat note. While the situations may be somewhat unusual, they enhance the story's unflagging pace. Children can identify with the predicaments-and the punishments! The black-and-white pencil drawings in each chapter are in keeping with the text's action and emotions. This African-American family will keep youngsters chuckling and turning the pages.-Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
Quraysh Ali
Maxine and her younger twin brothers, Anthony and Edward, appear to be ordinary African American children in a safe middle-class environment. That is, of course, until they get into a little adventure, which occurs pretty frequently in Blackman's chapter-by-chapter account. Then they become Girl Wonder and the Terrific Twins with a problem to surmount the ball lands in Miss Ree's flower bed, the cat climbs a tree, the spiders stick to the park bench. The superheroes rarely succeed, but kids will find these moments exciting. Perimeters are always set by a watchful, loving mother; however, these kids are so full of life that they can't help but create mischief. Although young readers will find the consistent rhythm of each story enchanting, the story may seem somewhat trite when read aloud. Toft's pencil work is warm and helps break the gray of the pages.
