Girlfight [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ayelet Prizant
The undisputed hit of the 2000 Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals, Girlfight tells the gritty, romantic story of a young girl who discovers her talent as a boxer in Brooklyn's macho Latino world. On the accompanying soundtrack, songs from Fat Joe "He's Not Real", MC Cuban Link "Project Party", and Remy Martin "Unstoppable" reflect the hard beats of today's explosive Latin hip-hop scene, with a host of familiar R&B, rap, and Latin pop artists rounding out the party.
The album opens with the brief but exhilarating Spanish guitar and piano of the title theme by composer Theodore Shapiro, who also provides an engaging love theme, "Tropicana," which features a lovely, simple string melody. The soundtrack includes plenty of hardcore rap with explicit lyrics there is a "clean" version available, but the overall mood is lightened by upbeat Latin-flavored pop from Carlos Santana "Olympic Festival" and a rap track accented by Spanish guitar K-OS's "Follow Me". Other standouts include Franky X. Perez's breezy "Forever 17"; "Compared to What," a soulful, piano- and bass-driven ditty by Gene McDaniels, and "I Can Do Too," the electrifying R&B single introducing vocal dynamo Cole and featuring rhymes from Queen Latifah. Boasting aggressive tracks from a stylistically broad group of artists, Girlfight positions itself for an easy one-two knockout punch that'll win over listeners as easily as the film won over viewers.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The original soundtrack to Girlfight, Karyn Kusama's Sundance favorite about a teenage Latina who wants to box, features a diverse mix of hip-hop and Latin music as well as excerpts from Theodore Shapiro's score. Cole and Queen Latifah's "I Can Do Too" keep the girl power flowing, while Santana's "Olympic Festival," Franky X. Perez' "Forever 17," and Ness' "Ghetto Mambo" pay tribute to the characters' Latin roots. Tracks by Dilated Peoples, Tracie Spencer, and Cuban Link complete this evocative soundtrack, which like the film, is equal amounts guts and glory.
