Overview

Kate’s not the type to lose it over a guy. So she’s appalled by her mom’s summer plan: to drag Kate along to Cape Cod, in a ploy to make Kate’s dad jealous. But just when Kate’s resigned herself to three months of stoic solitude at the country club, a cute boy named Adam starts drawing her out, and seems intrigued. Suddenly Kate can’t help but wonder what it would be like if a guy lost it over her.…
When her breezy romance quickly grows more complicated, can Kate keep pretending Adam is just a carefree fling? Or will she risk telling him her real feelings? Now Kate is asking herself a question she never thought she’d stoop to: Is she girlfriend material?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Kantor (The Breakup Bible) writes a funny and intimate story of summer romance and family conflict featuring 16-year-old Kate, who wishes she could be more like the independent heroine of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, Lady Brett Ashley ("without a doubt the coolest woman in the world"). But Kate's plans to spend a peaceful summer writing, reading and playing tennis go awry when her mother, wanting a temporary separation from Kate's father, whisks Kate away to stay with old friends at their summer house in Cape Cod. Besides resenting being uprooted, Kate feels uncomfortable around the friends' daughter, Sarah, who is less than pleased to have Kate tagging along. Amusingly neurotic as a narrator, Kate gradually gains confidence as she cultivates friendships with other teenagers, especially cute Adam ("Was it my imagination, or did he say big serious relationship as if it were a repugnant political party"). The changes in Kate are both gradual and realistic, as she learns painful lessons about love, her parents' failing marriage and her own needs. Her emotional journey and acute self-consciousness are likely to strike a chord. Ages 12-up. (May)

Children's Literature
In the frequent battles between her parents, Kate Draper usually sides with her father, and her older sister Meg usually sides with their mother. But it is Kate who has to go to Cape Cod with their mother instead of staying home in Salt Lake City where she is taking a summer creative writing class and practicing her tennis game. The only thing Kate likes about the trip is that they will be staying with her mother's old college friends, Henry and Tina, who have a daughter a year older than Kate. But when they arrive, it is clear that Sarah does not want to spend any more time with Kate than she has to. Kate tells the story of the summer before her junior year in an often humorous and usually insightful voice that expresses a range of emotions. She is angry with her mother for dragging her off and for temporarily leaving her father. She is uncertain about her ability to attract boys, and Sarah's unfriendliness isolates her. She loves to read, and she daydreams about being the cool and beautiful Lady Brett Ashley, from Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. Then she meets Adam, one of Sarah's friends, who becomes very interested in her. To protect her emotions and to seem more experienced than she is, Kate returns his interest but pretends that she does not want the relationship to go beyond the summer. By the end of the summer, much has improved in her life. Her parents have not made up, but she has developed a greater closeness with her mother, she and Sarah have become good friends, and she and Adam are planning to see each other when he comes to Utah to ski at Christmas. Reviewer: Judy DaPolito
School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—Salt Lake City native Katie, 16, is planning a great summer with her friend Laura. She is registered for a fiction writing class and has scheduled daily tennis practices, activities that will keep her out of the house so that she can avoid her warring parents. Suddenly her mom announces that she and Kate will be spending the summer on Cape Cod, at her old friends' house. Although Kate is unhappy that her plans have been shelved, she looks forward to spending time with Sarah, the pretty, self-confident and super-cool hosts' daughter. Unfortunately, Sarah is clearly less than pleased to have a new sidekick. Kate determines to make the best of the situation and lands a job teaching tennis, and eventually Sarah mellows enough to be friendly and include her socially. Kate falls hard for good-looking, smart Adam, necessitating her to deal with a complicated romantic relationship while coping with her parents' possible divorce. In this engaging and satisfying novel, nothing earth-shattering happens but the dialogue is witty and readers will relate to the realistically described roller coaster of emotions of a typical suburban teenager. This is the perfect book to give to a someone who loves Maureen Daly's teen classic, Seventeenth Summer (S & S, 1981), or Kantor's earlier books.—Susan Riley, Mount Kisco Public Library, NY
Kirkus Reviews
Kate's dreams of a perfect summer are dashed when her mother announces that she is taking her from their home in Utah to stay at an old friend's house on Cape Cod. While her mother receives the support she needs for her failing marriage, Kate has to fend for herself. She manages to make a few friends, find a job teaching tennis and meet Adam. At first Kate imagines a fun summer fling, but her feelings for Adam quickly become more complicated. Kate is simultaneously oblivious to the reality of her parents' situation and completely sensitive to her own emotional life. While understandable and developmentally appropriate to a point, Kate's obtuseness in the face of obvious evidence may well leave readers frustrated. Realistic dialogue and a quick pace keep the story lively, but uneven character development, unlikely plot twists and an overly familiar plot keep this from hitting its mark. (Fiction. 12 & up)

    A Great Read

"Girlfriend Material" is a great read. This book has the right amount of romance and drama. Katie gets a change of plans for summer vacation. Instead of going to Salt Lake to visit her dad, Katie now has to go across the U.S. to Cape Cod with her mom so that her mother can visit an old friend and her family. When Katie arrives things didn't go as planned. Her mom's friend's daughter, Sarah who was her friend at a young age now seems like she wants nothing to do with her. As days pass on Katie is starting to figure out that being in Cape Cod isn't as bad. Katie even thinks that maybe Sarah isn't such an annoying New Yorker. Also things start to heat up between Adam and Katie after the game of golf with his friends. Also maybe giving Natasha, a 13 year old girl tennis lessons isn't the worst thing in the world but for 20 dollars an hour, Katie hasn't even considered backing down.
As you get into the novel it will make you wonder, and as you read more you won't be able to put this book down. This book is a very decent book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good dramatic book. I am less than half way done and already I don't want to put it down.

    fabulously fun

Kate has her summer all planned out - hanging out with her BFF and playing tennis. But she doesn't count on her mother dragging her across the country to visit her college friends and to get away from her husband. Kate knows that her parents have their marital issues - but why does she have to be pulled into their fight. At first she's seriously annoyed at her mother. They have to stay in the guest cottage - which is actually a garage. Kate has to share the one room with her mother who won't stop talking, which is a problem because Kate and her mother have never been close. Tina has a daughter the same age as Kate and the two moms force the girls to hang out. Kate feels more and more like an outsider with Sarah and her friends as Sarah's making it perfectly clear that she doesn't want to hang out with Kate. Slowly Kate begins chatting with her friends and finding her own groove. Celebrating the 4th of July, Kate has a romantic moment that changes her summer. Adam is everything a girl could want in a first boyfriend. Kate's finally happy being in Cape Cod , but in just a few days her world comes crashing down. Will it be a summer to remember or a summer to forget?

Melissa Kantor pens a sweet summer novel filled with romance, family drama, friendships, and finding yourself. The cover is cute and eye-catching. Check it out if you're looking for something fabulously fun.

Reviewed by Dianna Geers for TeensReadToo.com

Katie had the perfect summer in progress: hanging out at her best friend's house, creative writing classes, and tons of time to perfect her tennis game so she could make varsity the next school year. That is until her mom decides to take Katie along with her for "time away" from her father so they can reevaluate their relationship.

Katie wants to be home living her life and is mad that her mom drags her along to her mother's best friend Tina's house. In Cape Cod! But Katie decides she might be able to make the situation tolerable - she had visited there once before and gotten along well with Sarah, Tina`s daughter.

When Katie and her mom arrive, Katie realizes that Sarah is just as unhappy with Katie's arrival as she is. Sarah avoids Katie and makes it quite clear that Katie is not invited to her activities.

To help pass her time, Katie accepts an offer to coach a girl in tennis. She struggles to teach the young girl as the girl's father hounds her with criticisms.

Katie keeps trying and trying to make this summer living arrangement work for her. Each time she thinks she has made it doable, Katie finds out she is sorely wrong.

What will Sarah think when Katie starts hanging out with her friends?

And when Adam actually seems to like her..like LIKE her, there has to be a catch! She's not the girlfriend type. She's never had a boyfriend before. And those things just don't happen to Katie.

    Or do they?

Will Katie's summer be a complete flop? Or will she manage to survive? Join Katie as she tries to survive outside of her comfort zone, and even learns that things are not always what you think they are at first. Sometimes they are WAY different.

OH-EM-GII!!!! this book was the absolute best. i could totally relate to it.
ok,so kate moves to cape cod for the summer with her mom. they have old friends there so they move in with them. her parents are in a bad spot in their relationship. so while there kate tries to rekindle an old friendship with sarah. but at first sarah is the snobby, spoiled, private school,, new englander girl. when sarah is forced to take kate to the club(like a fancy community club) she meets some of sarahs friends: jenna, lawrence, and adam. of wonderful, beautiful adam. a fews days later at a july 4 dinner party on the beach, kate and adam go for a walk and kiss. theres a start of a relationship. but adam doesnt want anybody to know bout it. when theyre out at provincetown and lawrence calls adam, adam tells where he is at but no who with. and its always like that. then one day when kate, sarah(they made up), and jenna are out whale wathcing they spill out a secret. adam has a GIRLFRIEND named molly. suddenly kate feels sick. she cant believe it, she doesnt like adam anymore, she starts to ignore adam. adam has no idea what is going on with her. kate yells at her parents, her tennis student, and of course adam. one day sarah comes home to find kate in the living room crying and asks whats wrong. thats when she tells sarah about her and adam. well of course since therye friends now they talk and sarah tells kate about her crsuh on adam's twin brother!!! so kate goes and talks to adam about how she feels about him. but shes turned around cause she cant face him. so shes letting this all out. then when shes done the boy tells her shes david, adams twin brother. she goes home and crys. then later that night adam stops by saying his brother told him what had happened and they go for a walk. thats when she tells adam they cant do this anymore. he asks why but she doesnt say. somehow from a few friends he finds out she knows bout molly. so he goes up to new hampshire to see molly. and kate finds out about that. but whats gonna happen when he comes home and kate thinks she knows why he went. well just a reminder boys, its not nice to break up with a girl on the phone. DO IT IN PERSON!!!!!!
