Meet the Author

R. L. Stine

R.L. Stine's books have sold more than 300 million copies, making him one of the most popular children's authors in history. Besides Goosebumps, R.L. Stine has written series including: Fear Street, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room, and Dangerous Girls. R.L. Stine lives in New York with his wife, Jane, and his King Charles spaniel, Minnie. www.RLStine.com.

Biography

Goosebumps cast a spell upon children by transforming even the most reluctant students into avid readers. Despite the fact that almost every book has a different collection of characters, the series has one common element that kids can't get enough of: the author!

However believable his plots seem to his readers, Stine insists he has never lived one of his stories. "I've never turned into a bee -- I've never been chased by a mummy or met a ghost. But many of the ideas in my books are suggested by real life. For example, one Halloween my son, Matt, put a mask on and then had trouble pulling it off. That gave me the idea for The Haunted Mask."

Although he never experienced terror first hand, he did enjoy reading about it. "When I was a kid, there were these great comic books called Tales From The Crypt and The Vault of Horror. They were gruesome. I discovered them in the barbershop and thought they were fabulous. I used to get a haircut every Saturday so I wouldn't miss any of these comic books. I had no hair at all when I was a kid!"

His ideas came from two sources: his memory and his imagination. "When I write, I try to think back to what I was afraid of or what was scary to me, and try to put those feelings into books." He also keeps a tribal mask and a skeleton hanging in his writing studio to provide eerie surroundings. Although he handles the writing by himself, Stine says he gets "lots of help from my editors, my readers, and my friends."

Kids reading Goosebumps may be looking for a scare, but the laughs they get are no accident. Before he was R. L., he was Jovial Bob, author of such works as 101 Silly Monster Jokes, and Bozos on Patrol and editor of Bananas magazine. His ability to know what kids will laugh at , as well as what will frighten them, makes the Goosebumps series all the more enjoyable for his readers.

Stine started writing when he was 9 years old! He would write stories and jokes on an old typewriter and hand them out at school. "The teacher would grab them and take them away," Stine says, "but I kept doing it." He wrote for his high school newspaper in Columbus Ohio. After graduating from Ohio State University, he moved to New York City, where he worked on a variety of writing jobs.

Although his books are fun and exciting, writing them is serious stuff. He treats writing "...like a job." To unwind after work he enjoys playing the pinball machine conveniently located in his own apartment.

For aspiring authors, Stine feels reading is as important as writing. He offers this advice: "If you want to be a writer, don't worry so much about writing. Read as much as you can. Read as many different writers as you can. Soak up the styles. You can learn all kinds of ways to say things." As a boy he read Norse legends, Greek myths, Edgar Allan Poe and baseball stories. "And Mad Magazine changed my life." Author biography courtesy of Scholastic, Inc.

Good To Know

In our interview with Stine, he shared some fun and fascinating facts with us:

"My first job in New York was making up fake interviews with movie and TV stars for a group of six movie magazines. I never spoke to the stars I wrote about. I wrote three-to-four "interviews" a day, all out of my imagination."

"'I've written over 300 books but I never learned to type. I use only one finger, the pointer on my left hand -- that's all. Three hundred books on one finger! The finger is very ugly now -- completely bent and curled and callused. When I show it to audiences, they can't believe it! This is my sacrifice for my art!"

"Sometimes kids show up at my country house and ask if my son Matt can come out and play. That's because they saw him mentioned in the back of my books. But they're very disappointed when he comes to the door -- because Matt is in his mid-twenties now! They were reading very old books! Matt is a musician, composer, and sound designer. You can hear his music at my web site, www.rlstine.com."

"I hope my readers get a chance to see my 4-D movie, R. L. Stine's Haunted Lighthouse. The movie stars Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Lea Thompson, Weird Al, and others. You can find it playing at four parks: SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, Busch Gardens Tampa, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Virginia. Watch out -- you might get very wet!"

Ok so my friend told me about the book and said it was really good. I read it expecting apparently too much, because it really wasnt that good. Some parts are great but the ending was horrible! it ends up shes supposed to be locked up in a physco ward and shes escaped. It leaves the reader hanging with a pathetic ending and an ok-but-not-great story. Im sorry to all the fans but i dont reccomend it. Its a good start but for it to be good in my book, you would have to add in a bunch more chapters, details, and A GOOD ENDING! that is all.

6th grader ( i chose this for a report and it was GREAT!)

The Girlfriend is a novel by the famous author, R.L. Stine. It is a story about a fun-loving teenager named Scotty. He¿s got a perfect life in school and out of school. The best thing though, is his girlfriend, Lora. They have been a couple since the 6th grade and now they are that ¿High school perfect couple¿ that everyone loves. When Lora goes off to London and Paris for a week, Scotty meets a new girl, Shannon. She has wild red hair and is very tiny with a shy little voice. Scotty makes the mistake of actually asking her out on a date and now she loves him so much, she¿s willing to do anything to keep him. Some examples of this are when Shannon breaks Scotty¿s hand. She may be tiny but she is VERY strong. Scotty of course trying to get away from Shannon, she squeezes his hand so tight and twists it this way and that, you hear a snap, and Scotty¿s hand is now broken. Shannon warns Scotty that she has older brothers who are ex-professional wrestlers. Of course Scotty is scared of this so he tries to be as nice as possible to Shannon with out turning her on even more. Eventually Scotty is faced with the problem of Lora coming home and he tries to hide everything that happened with Shannon. Shannon demands Scotty to break up with Lora and he definitely does not. To get Scotty back, Shannon sliced Scotty¿s beloved pet snake, Ernie in half, poisoned Lora¿s precious cat, Fluffernutter, and put Scotty¿s car in flames. Meanwhile, while all of this was happening, a big man was following Shannon around. Scotty didn¿t go near him because he thought that the man was one of Shannon¿s brothers. Whenever the man tried to talk to Scotty, he would run away, afraid that he might be beaten to death. In the end, Scotty hurts Shannon and thinks he killed her. He was so out of it and decided to bring Shannon¿s body to Lora¿s house since her and her parents are all at the place the party for Lora and Scotty going off to college is being held. With all of this, Scotty forgets it¿s his birthday and walks into the back door of Lora¿s house, Shannon¿s body over his shoulder, and hears ¿SURPRISE!¿ Then everyone sees the body over Scotty¿s shoulder and shrieks. About 2 seconds later the big man walks in and Scotty of course is very scared he will hurt him. It turns out that this man is an officer who has been watching over Shannon and been trying to catch her. Shannon was sent up for manslaughter and hadn¿t been living with anyone, no brothers, no mom, no dad, and no family. She needed treatment to get better. Scotty has a big, long talk with Lora and they love each other still. That party certainly had a surprise for everyone, not just Scotty!

    The Girlfriend

Scotty had everything going for him. He¿s the quarterback of the football team, going to Princeton in the fall, and the homecoming queens boyfriend. Lora goes to Paris for a week, and the tables turn. Scotty meets a new girl, Shannon, just trying to help her out when she becomes stranded along side the road. Instead of the two going back to the homecoming dance they go on a date together. As Scotty¿s lies are coming out when Lora returns home, Scotty doesn¿t know what to do. Shannon won¿t leave him, Lora, or their families alone. Will Scotty get Lora¿s forgiveness or will Shannon¿s revenge take an important role and ruin everyone¿s life. Readers into mysteries and strong love will love R.L. Stine books.
