Overview

For every girl or woman who has ever tried to make sense of the patterns in her personal relationships and how it all fits into her individual destiny, this book offers a welcome, fresh perspective. An essential handbook on a favorite topic—love—it will help women understand the wider meaning of love as a tool, a resource, and a force. It encourages girls to love themselves first and then reflect on the significance of love outside the common perceptions of romantic love and its role in their friendships and the world at large. It is a road map for every woman to navigate long-distance relationships, determine the real Prince Charmings, overcome icon infatuations, rediscover childhood dreams, and rule in all affairs of the heart.

The Teen Scene "It's survival of the fittest, especially in matters of the heart. Have you been training?" The sequel to Girlosophy: A Soul Survival Kit, Girlosophy 2: The Love Survival Kit by Anthea Paul, wraps spirituality and self-esteem in a graphically hip package. Based on the seven chakras, and characterized by color photography and sleek design, chapters like Survival, Heart and Unity emanate an aura of cool; a "Girlossary" defines terms like compassion, karma and marriage. A list of Paul's favorite books (e.g., The Autobiography of the Dalai Lama of Tibet) rounds out the volume. (May) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
VOYA
According to the author, girlosophy emphasizes intellectual and emotional balance, individuality, physical health, and natural beauty. It is designed to be a new philosophy for girls, providing them with the spiritual, emotional, and practical means to achieve their full potential. The two books are a mixture of advice from the author, excerpts from the writings of well-known philosophers and poets, and references to various religions and new-age thought. The books are rendered visually appealing through the use of multiple fonts, artistically arranged page layouts, and color photographs of girls from all over the world. A Soul Survival Kit endeavors to present common-sense advice to girls in a compact but highly visual format. The author states that her purpose is to provide information to girls at a time in their lives when they are still learning and growing. The Love Survival Kit uses the same format to focus on love and relationships. The author is not authoritative in that she is not educated in this field. She has traveled extensively, enjoyed numerous work experiences, including ski patroller, market consultant, and photo editor. Teen girls will find information in both books to think and talk about, but most of it is not new. The attraction is in the presentation. Middle school and high school libraries should purchase both books and display them prominently with references to the author's Web site at http://www.girlosophy.com. They will not stay on the shelves for long. Glossary. Photos. Further Reading. Gr 10 Up-A companion volume to the visually stunning Girlosophy (Allen & Unwin, 2001), this text examines the role of love and romantic relationships in a "girlosopher's" life. The book features the same dynamic art direction as the first. Gorgeous color photography shows lovely young women and, in some cases, fine young men. Sage and well-meaning advice overlays the photographs. Each picture suits the text and vice versa. Perfectly placed quotes from cognoscenti are liberally sprinkled throughout the texts. Paul's messages are again very sound and will appeal to independent spirits who seek guidance from like-minded women. The text reminds readers to take life seriously while still remaining flexible and to remember that actions have consequences. These lessons and advice come in short bursts with plenty of visual back up. Paul has created another beautiful celebration of young women, and her readers will not be disappointed.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
