Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Anne Liebst
Girls just wanna have fun, right? Do you really believe that's all there is to life? Readers find out that it is okay to be smart, succeed in school and work, and feel good about yourself in this new edition of Girls Are Equal Too, "completely rewritten and updated for the next millennium" from its first printing in 1973. The introduction closely examines sexism in our society--"a system that divides up what girls are allowed to do from what boys are allowed to do or makes rules for how girls have to behave and how boys have to behave" in a sex-role system. The rest of book is divided into three sections: "The Way It Is," "How We Got This Way," and "What You Can Do About It." The text relates how the women's liberation movement between 1965 and 1975 was a "Second Wave" and represented women's battles against sexism. The authors consider the nineties the beginnings of the "Third Wave," where women are "struggling against unequal pay, discrimination in educational and job opportunities, and the unfair legal restrictions on women's rights." The lessons taught and learned by girls--from learning to be stupid, inferior, passive, and dependent, to being adorable--are forthrightly examined. This easy-to-read ALA Notable Book honestly documents our sexist culture, reviewing the images of women in the educational process, the media, and in dating and marriage. It offers supportive suggestions for girls, teenagers, and women who want to change our society. Written by award-winning authors, who are experts in psychology books for young adults, this title will be a true asset for middle school and junior high school libraries. Index. Biblio. Suggested Reading. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P M J (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8 and Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9).
