Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Beth E. Andersen
If nothing else, Boys is a very cute book. Cute illustrations, hip, young talk, and lots of positive cheerleading are designed to build confidence and to reassure readers that getting into dating can be awkward and embarrassing at first. The familiar format includes self-tests, lists of sanitized dos and don'ts, and sound-bite advice covering topics from interpreting "guy-speak" to flirting rules to guidelines for gift-giving. But how helpful is a book on dating in the twenty-first century that is so skittish about adolescent hormonal power surges that it virtually ignores sex and all related topics-birth control, date rape, STDs, drugs? The closest Blatt gets is one brief caution about sending risquT pictures via the Internet and a short list of three Web sites-http://www.kissing.com (devoted to kissing techniques), http://www.teenwire.com (a Planned Parenthood Web site), and http://www.chooserespect.org which talks about date rape. Perhaps the flaw lies in the title—clearly the focus of the book is for a much younger audience and even so, practicality demands that the innocent aspects of dating must be tempered with straightforward sex education. Still there is a lot of worthwhile advice in this small book—girls would do well to study the sections on getting over a break-up, balancing boyfriends with girl friends, and considering creative dating environments. This series entry is a bit of a deceit but not without merit, but is an optional purchase. Other titles in the series are The Teen Girl's Gotta-Have-It Guide to Boys and The Teen Girl's Gotta-Have-It Guide to Social Survival.

    Very Happy With This Book

I bought this book for my fourteen year-old daughter who was becoming very frustrated with the world of guys the summer before starting high-school. She found it very useful and calmed down as she began to understand more from an objective source other than Mom (who knows nothing apparently). I really like that the book emphasizes being your own person and being happy with yourself and not needing the validation of a guy. That guys are the frosting and NOT the cake. She's happier now and is getting along better with the guys in her life.
