Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
This is the very best advice column for young girls. Based on a writing project begun in 1996, these young writers discuss everything from ethnic diversity to surviving your parents divorce. Not all of the topics addressed by these girls are serious, however. These seven to sixteen-year-old writers also talk about food, boys and clothes. An introduction by Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug gets the reader started on an adventure. Girls will find answers here that promote self-confidence and personal strengths. This is a highly recommended title for classrooms, libraries and as a gift. Note: There are four titles in the "Girls Know Best" series. All are worthy purchases for the elementary and middle school student.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-9--Girls do know best in this book. Its authors, ranging in age from 7-16, offer helpful and often humorous hints in the 26 chapters. Their advice is on-target and mature, and the perspective is fresh and welcome. Some chapters deal with life's embarrassments, grouchy adults, guys, sisters, and boredom. Others challenge young women to volunteer, participate in team sports, save the environment, become more healthy, bolster their vocabularies, avoid drugs, or accept the differences of others. The authors handle serious issues such as teenage depression, divorce, and cancer with sensitivity and insight. Some chapters offer ideas for just plain fun: backyard camping, homemade beauty recipes, and playing in the water. Small black-and-white photos and biographical sketches of the contributors, along with their pet peeves, dreams, hobbies, and heroes, are included. An introduction by Kerri Strug relates how she coped with challenges in becoming an Olympic gold medalist. Many chapters provide addresses and phone numbers of organizations to contact for help or information, and several books for further reading are mentioned throughout. Girls are sure to relate to this well-done offering.--Leigh Ann Jones, Carroll Middle School, Southlake, TX
