Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
Leaving the safety of elementary school for the uncharted hallways of middle school sends most girls into panic mode. Fears about getting lost, making friends and enemies, dealing with more homework, and the physical and emotional havoc wreaked by hormones are the stuff of nightmares and unfortunately, grim reality. Written in the chatty girl-to-girl tone familiar to readers of the magazine, this perky survival guide from the creators of Girls' Life is loaded with girl-power messages and sage advice delivered in a supportive yet matter-of-fact way. The colorful book is illustrated with cartoon-style girls of varying ethnicities and deals with a wide range of topics from good study habits and selecting extracurricular activities to handling hook-ups and break-ups with grace and minimal fuss. The narrative is broken up with quizzes, true stories, and real advice from middle school girls, which changes up the pace and keeps readers engaged. This fun read would make a great elementary school graduation present for girls to enjoy during the summer before they go to middle school. Although it would also be thoughtful for a teacher or library to have it available for students in upper elementary grades, passing references to and mild discussions of the physical aspects of adolescence—which are handled well and are perfectly appropriate for the intended audience—could cause disruption if put on a free-choice shelf and picked up by male students. Fun opinion on Middle School

Girls are always interested in "what's coming next". Middle School should not be scary but an exciting new adventure, maybe this book will take some of the mystery of Middle School, so they can relax.
