Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Stephanie R. Pearmain
This is another great installment of the "Girls Play to Win" series. Chapter one gives an overview of indoor and beach volleyball rules, positions, skills, and a description of terms. Chapter two explores the history of volleyball, which is closely linked to the history of basketball, which was created by Dr. James Naismith. William Morgan had played football under Naismith at the YMCA. Later he wanted to create a game that could be played year around. He altered Naismith's game and created what became volleyball. The next two chapters discuss volleyball's evolution into an international sport that took off in China, the Soviet Union, Brazil, and Cuba among other countries. The remaining chapters highlight stars of the indoor court and the beach court, including Flo Hyman, Holly McPeak, Natalie Cook, Kerri Pottharst, and recent U.S. Olympic superstars Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. The end of the book includes a glossary, book and website resources for further research and an index. Reviewer: Stephanie R. Pearmain
