Overview

Yoga teacher Michaela Caldwell has created this fourth book in the unique Girl Zone series, exploring issues of importance to girls and young women.
This joyful guide invites girls to get active, have fun, feel strong, and glow with good health. Safe and innovative guidelines introduce girls to the poses, breathing, and mediation exercises of traditional yoga, as well as its long and fascinating history. Unlike other yoga books that concentrate on yoga poses, The Girls’ Yoga Book looks at yoga as it applies to the lifestyles and interests of pre-teen girls. This unique "on and off the mat" approach offers realistic and appealing ways to incorporate principals of yoga into daily life.
Activities encourage readers to take quiet, introspective personal "time-outs", get silly with their friends, express their creativity, and stretch their bodies and minds. Real girls contribute reflections on their own experiences with yoga in Girl Talk sidebars. Yoga M"ohm"ents provide factual information about yoga through the ages.
Vibrant color and joyful design complement an upbeat text encouraging individual expression and balance. Clear writing and tips for incorporating yoga safely and simply ensure the best results possible for all skill and interest levels.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Young girls have so many pressures placed on them that they do not know how to relax. The author of this book believes that yoga might be a solution to that problem. Through breathing, relaxation and stretching exercises, young women can find their center and be better able to attack their day. The book is a combination of different elements mixed together. Most of the book concentrates on different exercises or positions. It is also contains background on yoga, including its history and the different styles. Interspersed throughout the text are comments by other girls who practice yoga. The best thing about this book is that it does not concentrate on looks or weight loss. Instead it focuses on relaxation and confidence. The book is full of colorful illustrations that make the reader happier just by flipping through the pages. Even the most struggling reader will be interested. While all of the poses shown are very simple, the author downplays the few risks involved. This may be a concern for some adults. Overall, this is a very positive book for young women. 2005, Maple Tree Press, Ages 12 to 15.

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
So many pressures--school, family, peers, boys--how is a girl to cope? Yoga is one answer. With simple, easy to follow instructions accompanied by vibrant drawings illustrating poses and techniques, this comprehensive guide is ideal for teaching girls new ways to relax, let go of pressures, and have fun at the same time with yoga. The book is divided into four major sections: "Getting Started," which includes a history of yoga, breathing techniques, posture, and meditation; "Yoga and Your Life," which goes through the various yoga poses and how to do them for maximum benefit; "Yoga in Your World," including how yoga can help in school and sports, how yoga might be used to help deal with squabbles with family or friends, even beauty and nutrition tips; and finally, "Putting it all Together." Included throughout are "Girl Talk" sidebars with comments from girls regarding their personal experiences with yoga. Part of the "Girl Zone" series from Maple Tree Press, this lively, yet informative guide will help girls de-stress their lives, feel great, and celebrate themselves as the unique individuals they are.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Benefits of yoga are identified through textual descriptions of exercises and vibrant color drawings of girls performing the poses and variations. Relaxation, breathing, and the use of yoga as a stress reliever for anxiety about one's body, family, school, and social situations is the clear focus. Facts about yoga and the language and different types are sprinkled throughout the book, while brightly colored boxes provide information on how to perform the poses in a sequential manner. Quotes, or "girl talk," provide advice about life. The zany color combinations attract the eye to various sections of the pages, which sometimes seem too busy. Girls interested in yoga and in ways to relieve tensions should find the book lively and informative.-Janice C.
