PreS-Gr 3-Three retellings, including a contemporary "Frog Prince" and Oscar Wilde's "The Selfish Giant," keep company with a variety of slight, original stories and poems about love. A moral printed inside a red heart follows most pieces. In one selection, two penguins in a zoo grieve when they are separated briefly ("Love is missing you-"). In two appealing shorter tales a girl and her grandmother plant a seed ("Love makes you grow") and a father teaches his fearful son to swim ("Love is learning to trust"). The Victorian sentimentality of Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" ("Love hurts"), in which the mermaid is left voiceless, loveless, and finally dead, and a story about saving a gerbil whose leg is torn off by a cat ("Love makes you feel better") may be upsetting to young children. Cheerful paintings and spot art decorate most pages, but they can't sweeten this uneven collection.- Susan Hepler, Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
